beautiful bench. Big flex on the materials and hardware, big worth it for sure.
@melefthАй бұрын
Too nice to use. The tusk tenons could blow out, the leg vice shape will make it hard to hold larger or heavier boards. The mallet's going to get tangled up in your feet. What's the point of the huge tail vice? The leg vice can take non-parallel-sided pieces of wood (or could if it was the right shape). Sorry for being so negative, but this is a triumph of design over utility. It's also needlessly expensive and an object of beauty in its own right instead of a tool for producing objects of beauty. There's a peculiar fetishization of benches going about which only serves as a barrier to entry to newbies.
@comboschtap2 ай бұрын
Great job! Can you please comment the vices and screws more in detail? No-one ever mentions the vice screws costs and where to get them. These things seem to be super expensive if purchased as far as my humble research. I've seen prices going from $200 to $600+. Can't make it as a beginner but also too expensive. Thank you in advance.
@999Eikes2 ай бұрын
@@comboschtap yea they’re quite pricey. I bought the twin screw from Lee Valley for like $400 CAD and the benchcrafted from their site for around $500 cad I believe. All in it was like $1000 for the hardware 😅. But they last a lifetime (hopefully) and have been amazing to work with if woodworking is something you want to invest in

If you're still "dialing in" your #4, I suggest you come to a drop in class Urban Woodworker school. Owner/teacher has a relationship with Lie Nielsen and he is super knowledgeable about hand tools. The shop is fully stocked with LN and Veritas tools that you can try before committing to a large purchase.

Hi, it looks v nice . I do have a question though, would you have preferred to move the legs further apart? (I do realise you may have do this at one end for the twin screw end vice)😊
@999Eikes9 ай бұрын
Yea, I tried my best to push the legs out as far as possible. Currently the right leg is almost right up against the twin screw vise screw when closed. Ideally the workbench would have been a bit longer and that would help a bit more with stability, but I couldn’t afford the space.. it’s not a bad size as is, but I’d prefer a bit longer for sure
@benconstruct8 ай бұрын
Hi Sean-only just realised you Ve left out the cross mortise & tenon, (short ways on the bench), any reason or did you think it unnecessary with the strong maple 🍁 worktop?
@999Eikes8 ай бұрын
@@benconstruct good question. I’ve actually got a mahogany through tenon at the top of the legs that runs perpendicular to the table length that the tabletop rests on, and I’ve also got a dovetailed stretcher right at the bottom of the legs under the shelf that also runs perpendicular. Not too bad for stability, but should have probably done another in the middle for extra rigidity.
@benconstruct8 ай бұрын
@@999Eikes oh so you didn’t do the bridle joint & turned it into a full mortise. With hard wood legs, should work 👍. I Ve also wondered if that would n’t improve things, but was thinking more along the lines of adding shoulders to each side to give it more strength. (The one I am working on is only out of spruce -yellow pine type wood, but was going to use oak for that. )

Nice workbench really enjoyed ur video! Do u have the criss cross support on your face vise? If so how have you found it being on the slight angle? You seem to be the only guy on KZbin to do this and was wanting to do the same thing. All the best and keep those videos coming!
@999Eikes9 ай бұрын
The criss-cross at a slight 15 degree angle has not been an issue at all for me. It bogs down a bit when the jaws are open past 6”, but I rarely do that

Ok I found this interesting... but I don't find a $5 lamp sold by idea cheap at $18. It doesn't matter if it's nothing to your budget, it's a rip off. Don't misconstrued this as an insult to your, I just hope people begin to see corporate greed and price gouging. If we all take action then they will either stop it or suffer the consequences. This isn't about us that can afford these things, it's about the poor that are increasingly shut out of a standard lifestyle.

In the final stages of my Moravian workbench build. I have my Benchcrafted Glide Vise assembly, but Benchcraft is advising me NOT to install it on a angled leg, but rather they insist it needs to be installed vertically. I love your design, so wonder about any impaired functionality with the angled installation of the glides?
@999Eikes Жыл бұрын
Good question, that was one of my concerns as well, but it’s great. It’s at about a 15 degree angle and it’s smooth as butter until about 8 inches out from closed and then it seems to bind a tiny bit past that. But it’s perfect for my use case since I rarely need to clamp something bigger than 8 inches

This isn't a workbench, this is high end furniture. Gently used(one of a kind character), you could get a fortune for this bench. Designers would kill for this bench! You should get pics out to the home designers in your area and beyond. You may have to crate it and ship it, but somebody out there will be glad to pay for the opportunity to provide this (gently used) workbench to their client.

Beautiful work! I am also working on a Moravian style bench of similar size (small shop). Quick question. The legs look like they are at different angles. You mentioned that the leg vise end is pitched at 15 degrees. Is it the same angle on the tail vise end? It could be that the appearance of a different pitch is just camera perspective. Hoping I can make something that is 10% of the quality and beauty of your work. Thanks.
@999Eikes Жыл бұрын
Good eye, it looks slightly different because the chop of the leg vise is not quite 15 degrees. However, the leg set behind the chop it is at a mirrored angle with the tail vise leg set (or should be darn close)
