Hello Steve..........can I ask a question please. You replanted the conker into a container the same depth as the root...........doesnt the root need space to grow further, a much deeper pot ?

I sit on my porch every fall and watch the squirrel do. They do a great job and seem to enjoy themselves. Scappering all around. Enjoy the brist fall air. Hey did you know squirrels can run at 17 miles an hour. That without shoes or goggles.

I just place them in a plastic bag with a little water to make the bag damp … they will germinate within 7 to 14 days if it’s not too cold ( Oct Nov uk)

Hello. I collected many acorns from my area. When they were green they all sank. Now that they are turning brown, they float. Should these be planted when they are green?
@sergiucojocari3922 жыл бұрын
Green acorns (if these fall to early due to strong winds) are not mature to grow. These will brown, but not viable (hence, will dry and float). It is best to collect brown acorns late Oct, early Nov for the best result.

I planted 3 in some cups last fall, 2 of them succeeded, and now that it’s spring I transplanted them outside. They grew the first few weeks, then they stopped due to there not being enough space to grow. Now that they have space to grow hopefully they grow big and healthy.

@@stevebenson3592 thanks mate. Keep up the good work :)
Mine are still in their pots , they've just had their 4th summer, they are fantastic, it's so rewarding to watch them grow , I've started to prune them back just a little because I want to keep them from getting to big and out of control, I've got some acorns I planted too and it's interesting to see how much slower they grow than the conkers.

They are big pots I must add, they started in small pots but I've re potted them as they got bigger but the pots they are in now are just big enough so I can move them around .

Brilliant info, I’m really interested in trying this. So to clarify, you winterise your acorns outside in the soil rather than keeping them in the fridge? (I’ve heard that method talked about a lot)

I live in NZ so no squirrels - Aussie possums bad enough without adding insult to severe injury! So as to laying acorns on their side to grow, I shouldn't imagine a squirrel would be too mindful of that when burying a stash. I collected a pocketful of acorns 3 months ago from under a Northland tree and bunged them in a pot on a wait-and-see basis. I did not refrigerate them - our summers are really hot - but I scarified them lightly on sandpaper and soaked them overnight in a very dilute seaweed solution, then planted, all in the same container, arse-up. So far there are two seedlings showing, so I might now transplant them as per your method. I have a one third acre section in the far north but, at the age of 73 I will not see an oak tree to maturity even though they grow faster and croak sooner here than in their native land. They often need cable bracing of the heavy limbs, especially if near pedestrian traffic. The Waikato town of Cambridge is a good place to see English trees in full glory during spring time. Being inland and further south, they do get reasonably heavy frosts. Cheers, Col.

As a child I lived in a village down from Castle Hill. My brothers & I would walk through the cow fields & climb up to the top, hard going through snow but even harder on a very windy day. I have memories of standing by the castle where we would lay into the oncoming wind & the sheer force would keep our bodie lifted at an angle! One of my favourite places with many years of memories. I took my own children there & my boys raced their remote control cars up there & our whippet would chase her ball. Happy days 💞

I planted a conka 2 years ago in my garden and it grew to 1ft after one year but this year it has really took off and has loads of new growth and leaf and measures over 2 ft it looks amazing! However I would like to move it before it gets too big. What time is best to move it where it will spend its lifetime ?
