Hi Craig. That Nintendo survey is from 2017, you can found it for example at Game Developer website, article "Nintendo survey reveals who's purchasing the Switch". More recent data, for example Circana's 2023 survey suggest pretty much 50-50 split (for example, search for Nintendo Everything's article "52% of Switch consoles are female owned in the U.S."). But PlayStation and Xbox owners are (according to same survey) more male-dominated. But I think the Capcom survey is more accurate in the "hardcore games" sense because of the IP they produce. It pretty much suggest what we all known - a lot of female Switch owners play only games like Animal Crossing or mobile-ish games. Nothing wrong with that ofc, but it is a problem when game developers and publishers don't understand that difference and thinks that somehow all those women will suddenly find interest in some FPS just because they make it more colourful etc.

I'm still amazed that no one who is reporting on these Bioware layoffs and the possible closure of the Edmonton studio has mentioned that the Edmonton studio is Bioware's headquarters, and the last studio the company has left. All their other studios were shut down, or absorbed by EA. If the Edmonton studio closes, then Bioware is effectively dead, whether they are claiming to be working offsite or not.

I think there Is majors distinction between who's playing and who's buying. In the same way a iPhone and Android users aren't the same revenu wise for content maker. I have a degree in computer science. There were 4 girls in computer science at my university. When you have a major full of nerdy guys, females are super stars. We would have been ecstatic to have more women in our classes. They just don’t sign up for the degree.

ESRB rate all games and that includes Candy Crush. It is a game. I don't see what's so important about this statistic. Nobody is making a game for literally every gamer.

Games have always been male dominated, which is logical. Does that mean there aren't games for women? Sure, the Sims is a franchise dominated by women and Tombraider has an enormous female fan-base as well. But you know, that's not what the game journo's want. Those numbers are real not only the US in the world, My entire family consists of gamers. I have many female cousins who are gamers, and on both sides of my family. My dad has nine brothers and one sister, while my mom has one sister and one brother. Each family has three siblings. Every New Year, we have a LAN party and play video games together. Most of my cousins are female, and based on my observation, women tend to stick to one system and don't purchase new systems immediately. They play all the time, and my console apps on my phone are a testament to that. Their tastes are well-established; they don't really enjoy "woke" games. They prefer classic games like Halo, Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, Pokémon, Age of Empires, and Silent Hill. Women that are gamers usually are not that active consumers they are more prone to old-school, and usually they don't look like gamers despite spend long hours.

Those numbers are complete nonsense. The percentage of gamers that are women is about 5-10% and that’s being generous, BUT, if we add in mobile games like candy crush suddenly that number is about 50-55%. Yes women play games, but it’s almost exclusively mobile games (nothing wrong with this btw). We have known this forever. Mainline games are almost entirely played by guys, there’s definitely a lot more women with the advent of streaming buts it’s still nowhere near 50% without including mobile gaming.

The only problems I saw here were the overall awkwardness of the presentation, which is to be expected from people with no REAL showmanship skills (after all, the big part of the old game awards was the spectacle, if there's nothing interesting to look at/listen to - then why not just read a list instead?), and the small voting pool. Did some calculations based off the numbers provided and looking up total Switch sales as of Dec 2024. Assuming 52% of all female gamers do own a Switch, that puts their total worldwide population at just 39 million. For reference, there are 120 million males who baght a Switch; meaning, just using Switch owners alone, men outnuber ALL gamer girls(tm) by 4:1.
