Thanks for trying to do this comparison but your tests are truly not representative of reality and ultimately a useless means of comparison. First thing to know about filters is that they are NOT strainers. Strainers physically stop particles larger than the open spaces in the strainer's mesh. Filters need to, and can, attract particles smaller than the path width between filter fibers. To do this, filter media needs some thickness and the path that air takes through the filter must be tortuous, so that the particles carried in the air stand a good chance of striking and sticking to a fiber in the media. Filters with a large surface area benefit from slower air speed through the media and ALL filters, paper and otherwise, have some kind of coating on the fibers that will attract and hold particles. So, filters filter finer particles better once the are partially loaded with "dirt". If you want to filter fine particles with less restriction - get a really big filter!

Hey there! I just wanted to point out a few things. Repeating "1,2,3,4,5" and saying "I don't see anything" isn’t really a scientific approach, you know? That said, I appreciate that you brought the camera closer and showed us the sand particles-because honestly, that’s more than just a “little bit” of sand. There’s quite a lot of large particulates visible, and a good filter shouldn’t let particles larger than 10 micrometers pass through. For context, the size of fine sand is around 250 micrometers! Saying it performed "pretty well in general" under these conditions is misleading and could be risky. High-performance filters often allow more particulates into the engine’s cylinders, and that debris can also end up in the oil due to gaps between the piston rings and cylinder walls. For anyone who wants to save a lot of money on future repairs, I’d strongly recommend sticking to OEM filters rather than these “magic high-performance” or 3rd-party alternatives. The same goes for oil filters-avoid ones made in China or sold at places like AutoZone. There’s a noticeable difference between a genuine OEM filter (mine is made in Austria) and something like a Fram (made in China). Stay informed and protect your vehicle!

That is a pretty common sense answer that is the trade-off you want more air in your engine to produce more horsepower supposedly the obvious answer is yes it's going to let more debris in as well choose your poison.

Has the K&N been oiled? Also, doesn't the air pass through all those filter from the bottom to the top, not from the top to the bottom, as you had poured the sand/dust?

But if you put the same setup in an S4 with the supercharged it'll be quicker is instant response will be quicker

Pointless test ... wtf are u pissin about with iron dust for ... only result of this test is you've ruined a BMC/Sprint filter by pouring sand & iron dust in it u fool ... OEM pleated paper filter won't let any particles through (Fact)

I buy my Yamaha royal star venture used. It had 30,000 miles on it, and it had K & N stock replacement air filters, there are two air filters on these machines. I have a video on my KZbin channel, Yamaha royal star venture major flaw is the title of it. In that video, I pointed out all the filth and dust inside my intake system. I was blaming that on loosefitting plumbing of the intake system to the carburetors. But it turned out to be the K and N Eric layers were leading all of that dirt in… I have another video pointing out what I would do if I were anyone watching the video that had KNN air filters in their machine. They may pass more air which they do in testing, but, they also let more than 10 times the dirt get in. A KZbinr with a website called project farm prove that by sifting flour into a box with a vacuum below the box, pulling air through the filters in a comparison with a meter that measured particulates that go through the filters. The K and N oiled air filter was the one that passed the most air, and the most Particulates
