Even we are from the same linguistic family and the same roots, our languages aren't similar - it's actually pretty hard to understand each other. It's already mentioned here a little, but the main reason is our different history after crusades. Latvian has many loans in language from German, but Lithuanian, I suppose, has it from Polish. Talking about Slavic side, I think that main reason for that is Soviet occupation, which pushed a large wave of immigrants from Russia and other Soviet "republics" - it rose Russian proportion a lot (during first independence period it was very small) and forced Latvians to use Russian in society. It sometimes was easier to use Russian loan words to think about Latvian alternatives for it. Interesting that Latvian actually has very strong ties with Livonian - we even have lots of words and language uses taken from them, like "Paldies", "kāzas", "mare", "māja", using of wide "e", lots of grammatic structures etc.

Hey, I know that you posted this a very long time ago but I just wanted to say that you should listen to some older Lithuanian music, in my opinion it has more meaning to the words and everything is better. Take a look and listen if you want. Here are some examples: bernuzeliai, it’s a pop group, some of their songs are about childhood (tegul spindės) which is a new song but it’s still very good with a deep meaning. Or for example: žemaitukai, Vytautas Šiškauskas or even Inga Valinskienė. The thing is when you understand the words and meaning the song becomes so much better. You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but I just think that these type of songs need more attention because they’re so meaningful. I hope you see this, thanks 🙂
