didn't you forget the 4 in the last row after subtracting I ?

Why is the bounds for y -z to z, I did not fully follow that. I can accept that -z to z are the bounds for y, but why is it not the same for x also?
@DrVsMaths7 жыл бұрын
Let me answer in reverse: If the region in the xy-plane was points satisfying -z<x<z and -z<y<z, you would see a square, not a circle. Your job is to identify a pair of inequalities that describe each of the points in the disc, and only those points. All points in the disc satisfy -z<y<z, but a different constraint must then be added to stay within the disc.

what if you get infinitely many solution? is it still in the span?
@DrVsMaths7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the matrix equation Ax=b can be consistent (with a unique solution) or consistent (with infinitely many solutions). In either case, b is in the span of the columns of A. If there are many solutions, then there are many linear combinations of the columns of A that result in b.

Why is the frictional force proportional to the velocity. It seems like that model would only apply if you are dealing with the air resistance.

how is it between zero and pi/3? (besides the picture?)
@DrVsMaths8 жыл бұрын
They intersect when sin(x) = sin(2x). I suppose you could just check that sine of pi/3 is equal to sine of 2pi/3 and think about why this angle is so special: doubling it doesn't change its sine. Or use the double angle identity sin(2x) = 2 sin(x) cos(x) in helping you to solve the equation algebraic. I'll leave that to you to try. Thanks for visiting.

Evaluating the antiderivative at x=Pi/3 should give 3/4, while evaluating at x=0 should give 1/2, for a difference of 1/4. Make sure you double the angle in the first term and take care with the signs.

How would the process of finding the volume change in the xz plane if z=x and z=(1-(x^2)) and y=x^2
@DrVsMaths8 жыл бұрын
This is a very different region. You'll need to carefully consider the projection of that solid into the xz-plane. Identify algebraically where the various surfaces intersect and try drawing carefully selected cross-sections of the surfaces.

I have to ask... at Time, 1:10 ..., you did a Pythagorean Substitution for Sin^2(2x) and used 1- Cos^2(2x) .... was that supposed to be 1-Cos^2(4x) ??? The reason I'm asking is because I'm just learning this stuff for the real First time.... and I assume I missed something..... any response would be appreciated.. and .. as usual... another Great Organized Presentation!! Thank You Dr V ...

I'm kinda confused here... my first thought is that the volume of a cylinder is (PI)*(R^2)*h .. and I see your answer is (PI * a^2 * h^2)/2 ... so.. I had to ask myself.. did you make a mistake? or did I make a mistake in what the Integration was all about... As usual, I assume it's my mistake.... lol... .. therefore.. I guess the Volume of the Cylinder acts as the Complete set of points for Something above and beyond the Cylinder itself... like a 4th dimensional Construct..... any response would be appreciated....... by the way.. ALL YOUR VIDEOS are Fantastic!!... Thank you so much!!.. I like the way you use different Colors too...

+Philip Y If we were to integrate f(x,y,z)=1 we would indeed get the volume of the cylinder. However, our example is f(x,y,z)=z. As you suggest, this could be viewed as "volume" under the "surface" w=z in four dimensions (x,y,z,w). Or perhaps easier to visualize: the density of the cylinder might vary linearly with the z coordinate. Then this calculation would be the mass of the cylinder. (Thanks for the question and the kind comments.)
