Question... I have a Crab Apple tree I'm getting ready to take down. Any suggestions on how to save the lumber for a potential set of pipes ? I'm sure the tree is large enough to make several set of of pipes of different styles.

You'll probably want to season it first so cut it into larger sections (not too long) and then store it in a dry place like your garage for it to dry out. There will probably be some cracking but that's why you'll cut it long enough so that you can choose sections that haven't cracked all the way through. If the limbs are small enough in diameter (ie 4 inches or less) they shouldnt crack. If they do itll be at the ends hence storing them in larger sections so you can just cut off the ends with damage.

Whatever you do, seal the end grain. Paint, wax, PVA whatever. Cracking is largely attributed to moisture loss through the end grain at a more rapid rate than through the circumference. Apple is nice to turn and has a pleasant tone for woodwinds.

@@sonneur37 Thanks ! I found a mill local to my area that can process the lumber. I'm just not ready yet.

all, Thought The scottish Small pies had like one drone and then the chanter and a bag that has like a Goose bag like look. I do know The Uilleann pipes look identacle though. I stand corrected.

great job! in your opinion is it better to mount a border chanter on a ssp, or a ssp chanter on a border ? I m still hesitating which one to purchase (in any case I d like to be able to make this 'mutation' as I can t afford to buy both the border and the spp for now). thanks

Your drones are designed to match the proper chanter. So border pipe drones harmonize with border pipe chanter as a rule. They are different systems.

Ну и молодец вы! A deeply resonant set of pipes and skilful right-hand ornamentations. Is the G deliberately so flat? It lends itself well to this kind of air for sure, but I've never heard a flatter G on a set of smallpipes.
