Apparently, they ended up in the treetops with nothing but their egos bruised. Can you imagine the amount of nagging and mansplaining happening up there? OMG Going forward, that will be the punishment: After avoidable mid-air collisions both parties will be suspended on an tree for a couple of hours to discuss life, etc.

Absolutely true!! I have to say there weren’t any nasty things said to each other - but it was more that the looks said it all!! There was minimal talking between the two….more like they were holding their anger in I thought!

My many years of hang gliding have taught me that often a paraglider will not initiate an evasive maneuver because it deems its reaction time to be too slow and it is up to the hang glider to do so. In a few close encounters with planes, I happened to experience this feeling that paragliders often get. In this case, both are at fault; given the trajectory of the paraglider, the hang-glider should have quickly foreseen that it was wise to pass it from behind and the paraglider should have looked to his left before initiating a turn in that direction and avoiding it.

I would assume the HG fellow didnt see her, because he was looking elsewhere? He did not react and flew right into her. No matter in which direction she would turn or not turn, his path was way too close to the PG.

As a HG pilot, o had some close calls like that. Theo is, if you are flying slow, the turn input becomes slow too. Sometimes It takes like 3 seconds for the glider to start a turn. Thats why everyone should thermal in the same direction and more or less the same radius ( slower aircraft in the center, faster aircraft in the outside).

TOTALLY the HG pilot’s fault. The PG was 1) lower and 2) slower. Double right of way!!!
@born2flygliderguy
@born2flygliderguy Жыл бұрын
It was definitely the hang gliders fault. And even IF the PG did something wrong (which he didn't at all, in my opinion, people turn, it happens) you still have to get out of people's way! Rule #1 don't crash into people! No matter what rule they're following/not following. It was obvious the PG was making a turn, it should have been easily avoidable. This was just an unfortunate mistake. Trucks crash into cars, cars crash into cars, trucks crash into trucks. Share the road, share the air. Watch where you're going.
@stephenkeen6044
@stephenkeen6044 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, it's the HG responsibility to avoid as the faster craft (hard to judge relative altitude from camera angle), but also the PG did two things wrong 1) not checking before turn and 2) not following rules of the sky and turning right. The first could well have led to the second if they were not aware of the HG, but they really should have been. I say this as a PG pilot who looks at scenarios like this in order to help develop better habits for my own flying.
@ecclesheat
@ecclesheat Жыл бұрын
They both should have turned right. This rule that HG needs to give way to PG because they are slower is not correct. The PG seemes to be turning left when everyone else is turning right....
@ecclesheat

In fact watching it again don't you think the pg turned into the path of the HG?
@born2flygliderguy

@@stephenkeen6044 I bet the PG pilot regrets not being more pro active about clearing and deciding to make that turn. But the ability to dodge that collision definitely laid in the hands of the hang glider pilot, like you said. I love all free flight, I took paragliding classes for a bit myself. Hang gliders are so nimble, I never make PG pilots move out of my way, it's just a different style aircraft. Some of my best pilot friends fly both. I was trying to do that but I'm terrible at paragliding.. so far. Just need more practice. The PG pilot was a little to the right of the HG pilot, so he probably did have right of way I'm guessing. But I fly like everyone is trying to kill me, no matter what the rules are. Sometimes people just don't see you.
@MKHNitro
@MKHNitro Жыл бұрын
Totally hang glider pilots's fault Paraglider was on the right of hang glider so hang glider should have turned to remain clear But I would expect nothing better from rude arrogant hang glider pilots anyway Paraglider was foolish to expect hang glider would follow rules of the air

@@born2flygliderguy The HG flew straight but should have spotted the PG and broke right and flew behind the PG The PG turned left into the path of the HG pilot, BOTH pilots are at fault. Neither pilot looks to have been aware of the other, neither pilot followed the rules of air.
@ecclesheat
@ecclesheat Жыл бұрын
Actually im not convinced.... looked a Pretty typical thermal situation where the pgs were turning in different directions. If the hang glider had been turning right with the pg that has the camera and the one that was off to the right. You come around the corner and there's some one turning left? But look like they should continue right.... There is general thermal etiquette that was drilled into hang glider pilot when learning to avoid collisions that was only briefly mentioned when I did my pg licence. I don't think this video is long enough to gauge Actually what happen.

Always clear your turns.. don't go over people thinking you have height. Pass on the right! This bothers me cause I'm a HG pilot, and I usually find it easy to maneuver around PGs. Things happen fast. Have to be very alert in traffic.

I would have J turned to the right as soon as he turned left. Love hindsight though. Hang glider (what I fly also) pilot may have been looking away to clear his turn also. I don't like flying crowded skies. Head on a swivel as they say. I had a closer than I like incident at Andy Jackson that I think was both our fault, but it all worked out with room to spare.

When I fly my PG at my local site the occasional HG comes out, and it always scares me. They're so fast, need lots of space to maneuver, and probably can't see their surroundings very well from the prone position. So glad these people were ok!
@born2flygliderguy
@born2flygliderguy Жыл бұрын
I have a feeling, this wasn't so much that he was in a hang glider, as simply not paying attention. That glider should have been able to see the PG whether he was in prone or not. And moved his butt over for the PG
@NevilleStyke
@NevilleStyke Жыл бұрын
@@born2flygliderguy Seeing a P/G and knowing what they are going to do next, are two different things. On our sites we have a local rule that 360s should be right-hand turning, within 1000' of take-off. As a hangie, I don't expect a P/G to make a left-hand 90 degree turn into me, without looking if it's clear, unless they have a red ribbon (less than 10 hours experience) displayed. When there is any danger of proximity, all avoidance turns should be made to the right (according to airlaw) and this P/G turned left and caused the collision.
@NevilleStyke
@NevilleStyke Жыл бұрын
You can see fine all around and underneath backwards, from prone. The one place you can't see is above (you may have noticed the same on your P/G). That is why you're supposed to get out of a thermal to make way for someone coming up faster from below. I've found that P/Gs are sometimes reluctant to give way in a thermal, to the extent that I can see their boots coming into view over my leading edge. Here's a low airtime hangie's view of how oppressive the slow flying P/Gs can appear to us. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZWyept9r8p6ZpI
