i have an doubt . in carbon tetra chloride ccl4 all bonds are polar but why is it insoluble in water . I searched on interent and it shows me like it is non polar molecule and water is polar . like dissolves like but why

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a nonpolar molecule because the dipole moments of its polar bonds cancel each other out due to the molecule's symmetrical arrangement: Symmetrical arrangement: The four chlorine atoms in CCl4 are arranged in a tetrahedron around the central carbon atom, with bond angles of 109.5 degrees. Polar bonds: The C-Cl bonds in CCl4 are polar because chlorine is more electronegative than carbon, meaning it attracts the shared electrons more strongly. Canceling dipole moments: The dipole moment of each bond is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction to the bond on the opposite side, resulting in a net zero dipole moment for the molecule. A molecule can have polar bonds but still be nonpolar if its symmetry cancels out the net poles. Therefore, CCl4 is a nonpolar molecule and is insoluble in Polar molecules like water. I hope this answer helps.

@@chemistrylessonsnew but my question is it have polar bonds so it can ineract with polar bonds of water

@@Sauravvv-k2x Steric hindrance, electronegative repulsion and proper alignment are the three major reasons as to why the polar bonds of CCl4 and water cannot interact. Steric hindrance: The carbon atom is small and the chlorine atoms are large, making it difficult for the oxygen atom in water to attack or approach the carbon atom. Repulsion: The repulsion between the oxygen atom and the electronegative chlorine atoms makes the alignment impossible, which indicates a high activation energy for the interaction. Alignment: the above two factors hinders the alignment of polar bonds of CCl4 and water Water molecules cannot approach the CCl4 molecule due to repulsion between the electronegative oxygen and chlorine atoms. furthermore, the bulkier chlorine atom shields the carbon atom and does not allow the Cl atom to approach the smaller and shielded carbon atom. I hope this answer is helpful to you.
