Hi! I’m thinking of taking a day trip to Isla Mujeres from Hilton Cancun. Any advice on transportation? I read a little bit about how Hilton Cancun does not allow ubers on their property but is there any place to walk to and then order an Uber? Or is transportation provided by Hilton or taxi the way to go?

We hired a private driver, and they let him on the property. You can ask the concierge for a driver recommendation, or just take a taxi.

There are quite a few hotels that won't allow Ubers on their property, and you can just arrange for the uber to pick you up outside the property, but the Hilton Cancun is too far off the Main Street for this to be feasible.

I've just come back from an Edge cruise. I've also been on two Solstice ships. I much prefer the Solstice ships. The caveat I must place on my comments is that on Edge we could not use the outside decks and facilities due to the windy weather which may have affected my review. Solstice offers more spaces to explore and use and, I might add, to get some relief from other passengers. I could just find my own space. It also meant that entertainment could be more diverse. The Edge has two main areas, the Grand Plaza amidships, and the Eden aft. Without the outer decks usable everyone was crammed into these spaces, although I don't think this was much of a problem. Both spaces had a stage and music, loud music of a straight middle of the road variety. The noise echoed up the vast spaces and intruded into the specialty restaurants around the GP and the so called quiet spaces and the Eden restaurant in Eden. If you don't want 70s troubadour covers it can be quite unpleasant. Also the food and wine on the Edge was inferior to that of my Solstice experiences. The main casual bistro on Edge was too small for the passenger capacity and it was impossible to get a table there during meal times. Breakfast was particularly bad.

They are two very different experiences, aren't they? I liked elements of both.

What month did you stay? Was there a lot of seaweed? Would you recommend this over The Royal Cancun? First time traveling to Cancun
@PassporttotravelАй бұрын
I was there in late April/early May and there was hardly any of the red seaweed. What are you looking for in a resort? All-inclusive? Are you trading in a timeshare week for this resort potentially, or are any of the hotels possible?
@alexxasmom1825Ай бұрын
@Passporttotravel oh this is perfect! We are planning to go April 13-18th! Was it warm enough to swim? We are looking for an all inclusive resort for a family of 5 (2 littles and a preteen) with a budget of low 4k max. We also like the idea of the 2 rooms so we have ample space. Do you have any reccomendations? There is so much i don't know lol and no timeshares.
@PassporttotravelАй бұрын
That time of year, because of Spring Break, is expensive. Some resorts have "kids stay free", but probably not during Spring Break. Royal Sands is probably not a good choice for you if you have little ones, as the ocean on that side of the Hotel Zone can be rough. It's a little unpredictable. But on the upper portion of the Hotel Zone, the water is much more gentle. I like both Hyatt Ziva and Grand Fiesta Americana for their kid friendly beaches, but during that time, it will be above your budget, unless you can find deal. The Royal chain does have suite's at the Royal Cancun that is in the upper part of the Hotel Zone with gentle water. Limited choices for eating, but they do have 2 restaurants, one right on the beach, and lots of families with kids staying there. You won't get the big hotel entertainment at this hotel, but with 3 kids, having the extra room might be more important.
@alexxasmom1825Ай бұрын

I stayed at Secrets Playa Blanca in late June/early July, and there wasn't any windsurfing at that time. There was a catamaran, but the activity staff would not let it go out if there was too much wind. So even if they had added a windsurfer since I stayed, you might not find there would be similar restrictions on its use.

I appreciate this comparison and your observations and thank you for saying don't always pick a class because it is newer. Pick the ship best suited for you. I have my strong opinion on which I prefer by far. The Solstice class ship is a better designed ship IMO with more interesting decor and has more character than the Edge class. The deleting of the Sky Lounge is a dealbreaker for me with the Edge ships. I don't like the placement of the Martini Bar and putting specialty restaurants in a noisy foyer (Grand Plaza, atrium, all the same type of space) is a bad idea. Solstice puts them in their own aft location away from the sounds/activities of the foyer. The decor, I much prefer the Solstice class. First of all, it's more evocative of previous eras like the 1920s-1940s but with a modern take on it. Second, the colors are more varied and rich. On the Edge, it's interchangeable with the new Sun Princess or NCL Prima with everything light and bright and rather rather gray/beige with more subdued colors. It's seen as contemporary but it's rather trendy and not so distinctive. It's newer, sure. But is it really better? In 8 years or when there is a newer class will it be seen the same way it is now? Things will break on the Edge class ships and some people even say that the oldest Edge ship, the Edge, is showing wear. Yes, Solstice isn't a contemporary ship but it's an intimate, more personalized feeling ship and I think feels more premium and better thought out. The ship condition is up to Celebrity. And I don't think the ship is in any way old. Ships should last 30 plus years so ships that are 12-16 years old are at best middle aged, not old.
@PassporttotravelАй бұрын
You've made a lot of great points! I personally love the Sky Lounge and the Lawn Club on the Solstice Class ships and did find myself missing them when I was on the Edge. But I did find favorites on the Edge, too, like the spa, which has so many more amenities, as well as the incredible Eden restaurant. So which class of ship to choose definitely comes down to personal preference, or even just wanting to try out a new experience.

Is the sports bar open 24 hrs ? And no air in lobby or common areas ?
@Passporttotravel2 ай бұрын
When I stayed, the sports bar was open until 1am, but stopped serving alcohol at 11pm. And yes, there was no air conditioning downstairs in the lobby area, the Vine Bar, the Vine Lounge, etc. Whether people are bothered by that is personal. Humidity doesn't really bother me, so I didn't mind not having air conditioning. But I did hear guests complaining about being very uncomfortable.

I'm sorry, but I don't know. When I was there, there was no advertisement of access, nor does the resort website advertise it. However, access to sister properties is sometimes available in hotels in Cancun. I did google it and some people have reported that guests at Secrets the Vine do have access to Dreams.
@benjaminsmith22872 ай бұрын
I want to know why a cruise line will build a ship for a "new generation" of cruisers when it already has established who its clientele are over many generations. And this new generation want a class of ship where the front of it is reserved for just suite passengers? Where pretty much every social space with music is tiered? And why is the design of the Solstice class intelligent enough to put the for-pay high-end specialty restaurants in relatively quiet areas but not the newer Edge class? What is this heart of the ship thing really? What I see is the central foyer, atrium, plaza, whatever you want to call it being a place where if you like all the activity and sounds, fine, but if you're dining in a for-pay area like the Grand Bistro, Raw on Five or Fine Cut Steakhouse, all that sound going on is going into your dining experience rather than something softer or no music in your experience. And why does a ship this size have no pub or anything like that. The Social Craft is a small area, nothing like O'Malley's on Princess. And where do you have some sort of choice between the music vibe and atmosphere on the ship since there is really no enclosed lounge but everything else is open? Eden, the Club and the Martini Bar really are the only interior social areas on this 140,00 ton ship. I can think of 60,000 ton ships that offer more social mingling choices of spaces. I just don''t agree with the high ratings of this class of ship. Celebrity could have done a lot better if they took out some shops and put in some quiet spaces because most of the shops aren't places where most passengers shop. They also could use quieter, more chill atmospheres and a real lounge, not a tiered one, or two, for other atmospheres for socializing. The ship just seems lacking in social areas with an abundance of specialty restaurants,. A piano bar, a pub, an indoor theater or small comedy or ensemble club or different music type of space. Something more than the usual do it in the foyer/atrium stuff. The staterooms are grey. If it were not for the velour runner and the painting, there would be next to no color in it. Must every single "modern" ship be the same taupe color? I don't know. Not impressed. Not a terrible ship by any means and it has great tech for now. But it falls short. It's missing some content and has some questionable design decisions IMO. And as far as elegance and a chic quality, it doesn't close to some of the previous ships like the Century, Galaxy and some areas of the Solstice. It's elevated mainstream vs. personal feeling or grand feeling.
@Passporttotravel2 ай бұрын
I think Celebrity is trying to stay competitive with what the other cruise lines are doing. The Edge Class ship is definitely different than prior classes. I personally really like it as well as Solstice Class ships. The positive thing for you is that the older ships with the design that you like will have cheaper cruise fares. As long as refurbishment keeps going on, you can enjoy that design at a lower cost. I personally love getting a deal on the older ships, right after they come out of a refurbishment in dry dock.
@tezza2024Ай бұрын
I just got off Edge. Gotta agree with you. Loud music of lowest common denominator dominated. It seems the accountants had a say in the design as 'efficiencies' were obvious. The ship was crowded and there is nowhere to escape except your cabin. Food was a disappointment. The standard has dropped from my pre covid Solstice experiences. As for the blog, her standards must not have been that high.
@benjaminsmith2287Ай бұрын
@@tezza2024 Yes, this is not a discerning experience line right now. The whole "modern" thing is not sustainable because this ship won't be modern in 2030 and beyond when something else will be considered "modern" over this series. And that leaves us with what? You can't depend on latest tech to impress people because tech ages fast (for instance, it already has USB B plugs opposed to C and who knows what the standards will be in 2030). And this idea that some people have the Solstice to go to now and the Edge are for different people doesn't take into account that the Solstice class will be transferred in time and then where do Celebrity fans go if they don't like the Edge class ships? The reason to point out some things in this class is that in the next class Celebrity at least makes another class similar to the Solstice even if it is only 2 ships and then make another Edge class of say 3 ships. I don't care if the next Edge line design gets more. I think there are people going forward with the tastes of the Solstice class that will head to Azamara or Oceania or maybe even HAL because Celebrity has changed the product away from high presentation standards and a medium level of activity with quiet spots to a higher energy, show oriented (shows are in the Club, Eden and the Theatre with too many acrobats, they're almost in every show--that'll get old if it hasn't for some of us already), a noisier product with many up-charges and even more suite separation classes for passengers not accessible to all passengers. Celebrity seems to want to be an entertainment line now and that's never been who they are. Their food is nothing like it once was as well.
