Dear Jeannine, Thank you for your message. The Lord is the Good Shepherd who loves us to bits and guides us. He always speaks in the silence of the heart, through people and circumstances. It is not hard to listen to His voice in silence with a pure and disposed heart. Some of us are more like Mary (contemplative) and some are more like Martha (active) but we are all called to contemplative and active service. Are you more Mary or Martha? Grace is built on nature so for a more "Martha person," God's will is for them to engage more actively in carrying His Will. On the other hand, a more "Martha person" would hand over more to God to act on her/his behalf. However, we must guard against becoming extreme and develop a healthy balance that includes both yet more inclined to an active or contemplative nature as the Lord made us. As St Teresa of Avila reminds us, both Mary and Martha are sisters and they both must be found in us. Now regarding discernment. The first step is to "hand over the situation to Jesus" to deal with it according to His Will. Then let the Lord guide you on how you can actively take part in dealing with it. If your action does not contradict God' love, is not sinful, delivered in love without self-interest then I would give it a try. If you go for it and it bears fruits then this is a confirmation that you have carried out God's will. This is what I would do. Furthermore, I will share my personal experience when the Lord did not want me to take a particular action and I discerned it. In these cases, He would make me hear His voice in my heart. Once, I was shocked that He did not want me to approach a person. So, I asked Him to give me a confirmation and He did with a sense of humour! Oh, He is so sweet, loving and full of joy and humour! Hey guys, I need help discerning when do you know when God wants you to act or “be still and know that (He) is God? We are not allowed to commit “Quietism”. After God told Mother Mary it was His Will that she marry, the Book of Gold says she “waited for God to Himself to arrange all the circumstances in such a way that His Adorable Will would be fulfilled, and this indeed happened”. I am often in a situation where I have responsibilities to others who keep making bad decisions. How do I find the balance of knowing when I need to act or wait for God to act? Yes, I am praying before the Most Blessed Sacrament, but God remains silent when it comes to this particular situation. I want to Trust God in all things, but I also don’t want to fall into quietism! It would be so easy to throw up my hands and say “Jesus, You take over, they are your problem”, but I believe I have a moral obligation to the souls He has put in my life. How do I know which He wants from me when He is silent? Daniel? Sam?

@ Thank you, Sam. I believe I am more of a Martha, I am disabled and spend my down time studying the Divine Will! Such a blessing! If I was healthy, I would be Martha 😉, but God wants me to have the time to study, contemplate and pray, so He limited me. I discovered the answer, God’s silence was Him telling me He did not want me to act on this particular thing. It is hard when you feel responsible for others entrusted to your care. I did have to put my foot down when an obvious problem arose, but my Priest told me at Confession today that I did the right thing. Someone was using Spiritual blackmail to manipulate the other and I had to make both of them aware of it, so that the victim wouldn’t make a bad decision because the bully guilt tripped them! But as for the bigger picture, it seems God will deal with it or change things if He wants me to act. I had a similar experience about the Holy Spirit. I was at a graduation reception and a man, I knew was not a faithful Catholic (his wife went to Mass, he never did) or maybe not Catholic at all, came up to me and loudly started attacking me about how the Catholic Church has all these riches (art) and won’t give it to the poor! This was right up my alley, because I write icons, and I knew the correct apologetics to give him, but the Holy Spirit bluntly told me to be silent and walk away and leave! I was upset because I had the answers for him, but I immediately obeyed. My children were upset when I abruptly grabbed their arms and said “We have to leave, NOW!” As soon as I got in the car, while my girls were griping at me, I asked the Holy Spirit why He did that and I was made to understand that “this man did not want the truth, he was looking for a fight! He did not deserve the Truth!” Wow! Never happened before or since. After later reflection I also realized I was surrounded by Protestants and weak (badly formed) Catholics. I live in a very small town that I did not grow up in, It would have been bad had I done my will! Thank you again! Fiat!

I need peace! When I'm so bothered by something that I can't control, like why is my 9 yr old granddaughter being so extremely difficult for my daughter and her daddy. So because I can't share this anxiety with my husband because he thinks differently with irritation, I shut down. emotionally. I need peace and comfort. I need to let go and let God.
