Most likely a mistake, cause damages to the eyes are permanent, unless that tongue blade from kongshen didn't hit his pupil he'll be fine as long as there is a skilled surgeon/eye expert. But I don't think his eye is fine, most likely lost his abilities to see clearly and is wearing a glass eye.

It is an Ice age they can not grow the plant to make the smokes, then if they where able to grow it lets say inside a building and had all the stuff to keep it warm they would still need to have the seeds which I dont think they have it. It is about as dumb as when they did the same thing in Water World. You save them for a special time.
