Do you need to be japanese to make this style of comic? No, I think people forget that America is a melting pot of all kinds of cultures, practices, and traditions. If a person can learn about a different culture in the country they live in, it should be accepted, just like how many people practice religions even if their family came from one already. I'm not japanese, but I've learned different types of japanese martial arts, and I draw Japanese animation art style combined with my own western art style, creating a hybrid. That's what art is, it should be embraced that we have people wanting to create from other cultures and walks of life. It's hard to accept for some, but it shouldn't be looked down upon. My art teacher hated me drawing her stuff in an anime art style, and she tried to tare me down instead of adapting and teaching me new methods to make my art sore instead of trying to force me to draw Real life and Still life. I don't think one practice is own by one people, why would we have movies of people going into a new culture to embrace it and even bringing some of their own into it as well. Things change, things evolve, and it'll always be influenced by people's experiences. "We shouldn't draw anime. We should just draw disney," that's boring. And I refuse to limited just because others can't see past their own limitations. Ask questions before jumping to conclusions. Also, when Western Manga/Comic's authors create their work they base them off of their experiences in life here in The US and Canada, etc. So we're always seeing different types of storytelling in a style we are familiar with. Is that so wrong?

In my opinion, Manga & Anime have specific rules on what they are like, despite the Japanese translation simply being "Comic & Animation". - Manga is simply a Black & White Comic - Anime is simply Animation done at 15fps or lower Anyone can do Manga or Anime, it doesn't matter if you're Japanese or not. Just like anyone can do a pizza without being Italian.

Anyone can make a manga but it's using a Japanese style. So if an American makes a comic book that's in the style as comic books, it's not a manga. On the other hand if we have something like what Cory is doing, where it is very obviously meant to be a manga (black and white, read right to left, manga type artstyle) than it's a manga. Basically author doesn't matter, the style of drawing does

As far Anime, just because it’s not made in Japan, doesn’t mean it’s not Anime. - Fog Hills for example. And in contrast, being made in Japan or by a Japanese studio doesn’t automatically make something Anime. - the various DC Superman or Batman comics or American shows like Thundercats were made by Japanese studios. Maybe Manga has more to do with the story/author being backed by a Manga publisher (presently or previously). Personally, I think it’s the lack of pressure and sacrifice western creators experience before just deciding “Hey, I like Manga so I’ll be a Mangaka now!” That is the BIGGEST factor as far as initial pushback. Readers (myself included) take that term and profession very serious so I understand how someone just saying “hey I’ll also do that...” could rub people the wrong way… But all in all, make what you want, read what you want, do what you want. Just don’t mock the culture you claim to be inspired by or blatantly copy the ones you claim to have inspired you.

They do have similar art styles but it is not a manga since manga is basically a japanese comic. This comic is English and has no links to japan. If we use avatar the last air bender we can see how they can look similar but are clear 2 separate things. Calling this manga can be seen as disrespect to others

One google search sorta shuts this down. Avatar the last airbender is not anime just like spongebob isn't. Corey's comic isn't a manga just like dc and marvel comic aren't. Just because you mimick their art style and try to emulate their writing does not mean that you are creating manga/anime.

@donbartolo12432 күн бұрын
To me, no. :) It's not the person behind the work that defines the product but the product itself. If the product answers to the codes, than you have it. The real problem is the understanding/accepting of the codes and the ability to reproduce/innovate them without falling into caricature and cultural shifts (USA Dirty Pair, French Captain Harlock, Saint Seiya, Grendizer) that betray the origins of a work. It doesn't make it bad, just different from the codes to define them as manga. (japanese comic style). Sometimes the foreign artists have not enough skills/knowledge to reproduce those codes, sometimes it's just because they have to respect the national publishing/market codes to make it bankable.

People Call them different for a Reason 1, Manga is in Black & White plus how it's Format the Genre and is read from Right to Left 2, Comic is always in Color and it's either around Superhero or Something related to superhero or Supernatural Etc. Read from Left to Right 3, Webtoon (Manhua, Manhwa) is always in Color read Up to Down Etc. All these Creators write Story differently Webtoon is either Romance or Action Level System Etc Manga mostly Isekai, Op Characters

You're vaguely right, but there are TONS of western/euro comics that are in black and white. And not all western comics have to do with superheroes, any more than all manga has to involve fighting or magical girls.

Peepo Cho is also an example of a foreigner that made manga under a big publisher (Kodansha). The creator, Felipe Smith American. It's a pretty fun read. On a side note, People forget some mangaka nowadays outsource assistants from across the globe to help with their manga deadlines. Whether it's just applying screentones or drawing entire backgrounds. In all honesty, you don't even have to be in Japan to make manga nowadays. You could literally do it from your room. They even hold annual One-Shot contest judged by big mangaka and editoral staff on Medibang & Manga Plus.

For me, I don’t care where it’s from or who made it as long as it feels like a Japanese manga and not a traditional comic, I gotta go into it believing that it’s Japanese ,because a lot of non Japanese manga just doesn’t have the feel

I don't think ethnicity matters. As long as it was made in Japan, then its an anime/manga. Simple as that

Tis what it is. Manga, western comics, cartoon comics etc. They all still fall under the category of Comics. Its not that complicated, but twitter make it so, for clout and engagement. Sometimes you just wanna go to that person making this an issue and tinker their brain for some anomaly in the circuits.

While many anime fans thinks is hard or impossible someone non-japanese to make manga in japan, it has been done. REALLY! Felipe Smith, an american (also Jamaican + Argentine) artist/writer did made a manga in japan: Peepo Choo. Run in Monthly Morning Two . Its 3 volumes long, and by looking at Smith's art and story, its doesn't scream ANIME at all. I suggest checking it out. The fact a NON-japanese artist/writer made a legit manga in japan, ANYTHING is possible.

In asia it is just animation from Japan. No if and but. Even most Japanese have to separate it with western comics. The reason Manhwa and manhua pass is bc it is from a sino countries. Most westerners "manga" is just a surface shallow understanding of our culture. Beside it feels weird af for a westerners to insert themselves into this medium made and consume by us
@BloodFeitan4 күн бұрын
Technically speaking yes ig? But you can still make anime or manga stylized media no matter where your from so yes and no

It doesn’t matter who makes it. It matters who buys it. You want these dumb people who consider themselves “purists” to buy your manga along with everyone else, you’ll have to be Japanese where they have zero argument with themselves. If this was not relevant, this video would not need to exist.

Aye let them be in opposition. I will call it a manga and if I ever make something I'm calling it a manga/anime. That's what I like and anyone is welcome to be an opp. Won't change the fact that that is what it will be called and the reality that it is. Your reality might be different but oh well.
