Living in Sonoma County for 30+ years, the closest I've seen as far as disseminating this information is the news we occasionally see about paused allowances for commercial salmon fishing, crabbing - the community is shamefully being kept in the dark. Please continue to bring this reality to the public - perhaps via making some political noise.

Outstanding podcast! Thank you for hosting Mr. John J. Berger, author of Solving the Climate Crisis: Frontline Reports from the Race to Save the Earth. Mr. Berger proposes realistic financing options, such as green bonds to relatively quickly transition our economy to renewable energy sources. I will certainly read his book!

This is such a subject where one keeps wondering who is idiologic lobbying and who is honest. I seem to find quite a few mistakes - or lets call them questions - here: I may have to admit that some of it is down to the area I am living, Germany. 1) EVs have no exhaust system, so they are zero emissions. Blatant Lie!! This is what the EU claims too, but this very claim to me is as big a scandal as VW dieselgate is! Is it really down to local emissions? Well, brilliant, then ice melting on the North Pole is no issue any more! In my area we cause 649g CO2 per kWh. This is the official 2021 figure, meaning before we stopped importing gas from Russia and before we switched off all nuclear power plants. This figure of 649g CO2/kWh is steeply rising, probably doubled by now! Even given the old 2021 figure of 649g/kWh means an EV that needs 20kW per 100km causes 130g CO2 per km. This is already no better than a modern ICE and the tendency is rising steeply! (And the production rucksack -that repeats with a potential replacement battery - is not even included yet!) Yes it is locally zero emissions, but that doesn’t help the North pole, does it? 2) Electricity is cheaper than gas (not that Russian gas - fuel!) - well it isn’t, but that may be down to my area, thanks to taxes and sanctions Germany has the dearest electricity of the whole of Europe. But I guess the more other countries switch to EVs, the more their taxes will switch to that too. 3) For EVs maintenance is less expansive - simply not true. It should be, given they have less moving parts, but insurance companies give higher quotes for EVs, stating they are more expensive to maintain!!! Since producing EVs is much more expensive than producing ICEs these insurance claims do seem make sense, too! One thing not mentioned in this is that, according to insurance companies, tyres wear out quicker on EVs for their added weight. Makes sense, but doesn’t exactly that mean if tyres wear out quicker, they produce more particulates too? 4) EVs are very quiet. - Are they? And is this even a pro at all? Modern engines are so quiet that mostly you hear the tyres on the roads and with EVs being heavier, the tyres are louder. Plus you yourself say that “legislators have required a noise making device to alert pedestrians” - the same in the EU btw, not only US. But if quietness isn’t a pro, isn’t the frequency more of an issue for the human ears? Maybe this is my personal take, but I do find the high pitch sireney noise of an EV quite disturbing and annoying, a dark rumble of a V8, V6 or even in line 3 is far, far more pleasant! 5) You get tax credits for EVs - for how long? Not for ever, for sure! 6) Same for car pool lane! 7) Charging can take a while - thanks for being honest here. Please note that quick charging causes lithium-asts and such makes your battery wear out quicker. And not everyone has a garage or a drive way. If you can charge at home over night, brilliant (over night? It's not on your solar panels then!), but not everyone has that possibility. If your profile is more long distance and motorway (highway) driving, then your range will be much lower and charging times will be a real issue. I am not saying EVs are bad, I see their purpose, if the postman or the indeed the old fashioned British milkman, but me and my family do everything round town on foot, replacing walking by driving doesn’t seem environmentally friendly, does it? Where we do use our car, travels of a minimum of 400kms M-ways, EVs just don’t make sense! Even a PHEV doesn’t make sense for us, we live rent without a driveway, no chance to charge, only using our car for long distance, we would end up just carrying around the extra weight, which simply can’t be good for consumption and environment. For finals: You say we should be weighing up pros and cons before making a decission. That is so, so true! EVs make perfect sense in some cases, but not in all. It shouldn’t be dictated upon us what we have to drive, as simple as that!

Cons: 1. They aren't actually good for the environment, cause lithium and cobalt mines destroy vast areas of nature. 2. Most people charge them at charging stations which use coal, gas, etc... to power them....which defeats the purpose. 3. The car batteries are good for like 10 years, then cost thousands to replace, which means more lithium mines. 4. The government can stop your car from starting if you don't obey. 5. They can be hacked. Pros: 1. You can charge from home. 2. Quick acceleration. 3. No transmission issues. In my opinion, the Cons greatly exceed the Pros.

Here's one......take all of your electric appliances & put them on powerstrips. When you aren't using them, TURN THE POWERSTRIP OFF. Appliances use energy even when turned off & or not in use. Half of all the electricity used in the United States is consumed when the devices ARE NOT in use. This is an old statistic.

Maybe that Stupid Brit PM should've kept her ignorant mouth shut that provoked Putin's reply of going nuclear. Most Americans have no idea what wreckless presidents have been doing with nukes since Truman. The new small nukes are what the whack-a-moles want to use, like what they got away using on the Nelson, and David towers. The U.S would use just a big enough nuke in the Ukraine to be recognized as one, and set up Russia as doing it in their standard false flag op.

EVs maintenance bills less until you have to replace batteries which cost 8-10 grand. Cold climate reduces car's range, batteries degrade over time so again, range reduction. Versus filling up with gas, charging takes way too long and imagine on a trip having to wait in a line up?
@cfldriven
@cfldriven 2 жыл бұрын
Gas cars are cheaper until you have to replace the engine, in colder climates your MPG drops, gas engines wear out over time. Unlike having to drive to the gas station you just plug in your car when not in use, which is most of the day and night. For most people with average commutes EV is a viable option. For that once a year trip to grandma house across the country is getting, quick charge stations are making that a reality. Of course there are other options fly, rent, hybrid and gas.

Imagine that it's 2035-2040 and the government has forced the majority of gasoline and diesel vehicles off the road. It's a long holiday weekend in December and the roads are packed with cars. A large blizzard covers the east west interstates and they become huge parking lots. Your battery is probably half discharged and the overnight temp will be around zero. The battery uses electric heaters which won't last overnight. It will take days to remove the cars and bodies. Has AOC or any of the green nuts thought about such a scenario? They better because something similar will happen.

@@Treva-dn5jb True, but power shortages tend to be shorter in duration than fuel shortages. According to EIA, U.S. electricity customers have consistently experienced average total power interruptions of about two hours (106 minutes to 118 minutes) per year. While you can't recharge during the outage, chances are the battery like your fuel tank isn't empty either. I live in a region with regular power outages and it has yet to be an issue with the EV, even when we lost power for two days.

This is a great starter video and everything mentioned is true. But I'd suggest anyone considering EV's do a little more research. It is estimated that EV's have a greater carbon footprint to produce than gas vehicles. Estimates for EV's is that they produce between 10 and 17 metric tons of CO2 vs only 7 metric tons for gas vehicles. And most of the electricity in the US electrical grid comes from coal so while the vehicle doesn't produce emissions, the mining and processing of coal to make the electricity does. Don't get me wrong, over time, EV's have a smaller carbon footprint and with tax credits and the rising price of gas, an EV may make sense. But one other thing to consider, the current EV battery technology requires both lithium and cobalt. The impact of mining lithium in some places like South America could be catastrophic for their water supply and cobalt mining in the Congo uses child labor which, in my view, is reprehensible and should be addressed before we all jump into an EV. Thanks for the video.

1) By reflecting away 30% of ISR the albedo, which would not exist w/o the atmosphere/GHGs, makes the earth cooler than it would be without that atmosphere like that reflective panel set behind the windshield. Remove the atmosphere/GHGs and the earth would become much like the Moon and Mercury, a barren rock with a 0.1 albedo, 20% more kJ/h, hot^3 on the lit side, cold^3 on the dark.
