I was 11 years old in 1994. It is amazing to see how much hardship our ancestors have faced. The British literally left India in a rubble. If this was the situation just 30 years ago, imagine how it would be in 1947 after independence.

Would be intresting to fine some cine film from that era. THis is why i have posted these films as a historic record, some people say dirty steam locos but that is what it was, thks for watching and please share to others

Today even diesel locomotives are also becoming very rare! With the electrification of reaching almost 94% in India, soon the will also become part of a legend like the steam locomotives! Who knows, in another ten years it may hyperloop trains running through out India?

Thanks for the nostalgia trip Ian! Sadly, the steam locomotives were phased out down South in the early to mid-1980's, especially the broad gauge routes in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. One could find a few metre gauge steam locos in Egmore used for shunting purposes in 1991-92. Kerala was probably one of the first states in India to phase out steam completely including the metre gauge line from Kollam (then Quilon) to Sengottai (then Shencottah).

I suppose this is 2-DS Delhi Saharanpur Passenger Train. I regularly traveled in this train from Ghaziabad to Delhi during 1992-93. Time of arrival at Ghaziabad was about 3:30 PM towards Delhi. It would be powered on steam during those days.

Upto 1994, steam engine was hauling one or two trains in Madurai division in Tamilnadu. There was a lot of resistance in 1979 against the proposal to abolish steam engines.

What is the tank wagon behind the locomotive for, extra water????
@iandorneyphoto2 ай бұрын
I think some were water and some were fuel oil. IN0095 from 1981 clearly shows "Furnace Oil" on the tank wagon with oil spills down the side whereas IN1201 from 1996 clearly shows "water" on the tank wagon. IN1241 from 1996 clearly shows one of each.
