Good luck with your 70.3 journey! Just came across your Haleakala ride (which I've also done), and up until 2017 had done a lot of road riding over the years (few 100mi riles, including one on my 50th bday). A friend of hours that did that ride with me, for their 50th year wanted to do 70.3 Hawaii.. so my triathlon journey started in getting ready for that. I had not done any amount of running since the 80s, and never any lap/open water swimming. And my first run... maybe 1/2mi and next day was hard to walk due to calves so tight (cardio no problem). But was able to complete the 70.3 and have since completed 2 others, had 1 cancelled during due to storm (finishing last part of ride in 40+mph wind gust and pouring rain), and 2 rampups that within 1.5weeks before the event were postponed. And my most recent rampup, found out on Mon before the race on Sun that based on the test was going to need a medical procedure. That race for me ended not long after starting, but considering the conditions and health situation I believe it was the best thing! Good news is, procedure done and back out there again running/riding. BTW, if you have a smart trainer the Fulgaz app likely has the course in it you can ride virtually and get familiar with area/hills (can also set wind speeds/directions). Oh, and I too are in that AG. :)

Thanks for the info. I’ll check out Filgaz. Maybe we’ll see you at an event. I’m hoping to do Haleakala again this winter.

That is an epic ride! When I did the ride, I really wasn't sure how far I would make it, but did manage to make it all the way to the top and what a sense of accomplishment and the reward of the views on the way down!! I also did the ride in no hurry, just to see how far I could get.

Best of luck with your newest journey! I have very much enjoyed your channel in the past and I would suspect that the widening of your focus will only lead to additional avenues for you to explore and me to benefit. Your long bikes may now include additional road and gravel options. We may see new places to enjoy long runs. As to the long swims, maybe there will be some options there as well. I hope that your tri bikes haven't rusted up! All the best for 2025.

Very exciting course. Am surprised to see those technical descents and agree that it does look like a mountain bike course. But the start/finish area is nice as is the forest. How many participants were there and what was your final time?

We’re not sure how many people competed. We finished in just over 3 and a half hours.

Thanks for the video. Some great footage. Ouch... that tumble at the end must have hurt. Waters Rd Bridge was luckily completed on the Friday, 2 days before the BWR. I'm so happy that the organizers did a last minute change to the Waffle route to go over this bridge. The Holt Trestle is the bigger bridge just past Glenora that is lined up for replacement (at 7:30 in your video). Construction is scheduled to start any day but there has been some push back from locals and trail users. If construction goes ahead, it will be closed until the end of May 2025.

Between Western Washington and BC the flatter environment where towns and cities are have very little space until they hit mountainous terrain. Therefore a lot of gravel riding looks like this, some road, some logging roads or forrest service routes and then a lot of rolling single track. Hikers and MTBers reign supreme in these areas, but if you're interested in taking your gravel bike handling skills to another level you can make it (with the right kind of attitude) on some of these courses like the BWR race or stuff you can come across on Ride With GPS, Strava and the Gravel Adventure Field Guides. 💪🤙

This race like last year is a mountain bike course. I see some of these races and think how sometimes gravel riding is a farce as many people say. This is cross country XC biking. Wanted to do this race and remembered your video from last year, saw the race bijbel and it was the same elevation. I said no way. Wish they would make this race more beginner friendly.

Hey buddy, that was a great video but I’m not gonna lie, your health situation is really worrying. I can hear the shortness in your breath and it makes me think I could actually kick your ass on a ride, which is pretty f’d up. The decision to cancel your participation in the Rocky Royal only underscores the impact Covid has had on your year. All I can say is get better soon. In the meantime, the videography continues to improve. Sure, you’re no prize, but who doesn’t like seeing video of Catherine? Ride on…

@@PiquePictures Dude, seriously, I think you need more coffee in your life. Not that poncy shit they sell in over-priced coffee bars, but the real stuff. A saturation level (SPO2) of 92% is low, even for someone just walking around. Even 95% is low for strenuous exercise like biking. Good decision to skip the event to avoid irritating your lungs.
