5:32 I would love a whole video on this: how do you know what music has what emotional undertone? like, yes, I can listen to music and I can feel the emotions, but a lot of the time I can't name what I'm feeling - there's a lot of nuance that I feel like I'm missing

@@mariojoos I’m of course biased because I’d love to see the video made, and I respect your dedication to epistemic humility, but that sounds like imposter syndrome!! if anything you’d learn so much *from* making the video! whenever you don’t know just say you don’t know and nobody can get mad 🙂

Good stuff Mario! Just something I'm curious about: you're a very evidence based strategist. I'm wondering how you indentify casual relationships between editing/scripting choices and retention. For example, how do you know for sure that single goal beats double goal? What's your data analysis process to reach this conclusion?
@mariojoos
@mariojoos 16 күн бұрын
Thank you for the compliment! That's a great question, and I'll do my best to give a "short" but comprehensive answer. First, while I am an evidence-based strategist, I'd be lying if I said all the evidence is conclusive and strong. That said, I’m confident enough that this piece of advice holds for now based on the following observations. In our analysis, we found that videos with double (main) goals tend to lose viewers once one of the goals is resolved. This is observable in the retention charts. However, to contradict my own analysis, the data was limited, so I wouldn’t fault anyone for holding off on fully accepting this conclusion until more data becomes available. Looking back at the video, I realize I didn’t fully explain the issue of "losing viewers early" and instead focused more on the impact of goal-setting. This argument came from my focus on attention spans and message clarity. In other words, I formed this hypothesis by integrating insights from other analyses and drawing on strong reasoning. We could argue that validating this theory is harder, maybe even near-impossible. In short: we cannot be 100% certain, and the data analysis focused on retention chart behavior (drops specifically) and reasoning from research related to attention and focus

@mariojoos very eloquently explained, Mario! I find this "two goal vs one goal" dilemma quite puzzling. On one hand, I agree that it's better to get straight into the content and give a sense of constant progression - after all, progression equals dopamine. I also agree that a needlessly long intro (and goals explainer) might hinder this. I also agree that if enough retention graphs show a drop in retention at a certain point, then perhaps we should listen to the data. But.... Think about this... Yes, there may be a handful of impatient people who leave the video early because the goals were waffled about for too long. But for the people who stuck it out to keep watching, what if providing more reasons to keep watching might very well keep them glued to the screen for the rest of the video? Explaining multiple goals might cause an instant retention graph dip, but in the remaining duration of the video, it might result in a smoother flatter curve? Again, this is all very hypothetical without a tonne of data and controlled experiments to back it up, but very fun to think about nonetheless. Do you think that the tools KZbin equips us with are adequate to inform our decisions as content creators? What gaps are left to be filled?

I like hypothetical, they make us think. A lot of findings come from hypothetical; what if X isn't true, but Y happens instead? I'll start with your final question: I do not believe KZbin equips us with the adequate tools to make really good analysis. It's significantly better than anything out there; but more can be done in my opinion. For example, the retention data can be more granular, the reporting can be in terms of seconds rather than 1% increments, and we could have A/B testing tools for video content that allows us to experiment with different ways to edit a certain segment. (Note: their internal team is doing a great job already as they've been starting to talk to strategists more) For your hypothesis, it's not a bad start to think that we're giving people more reason to watch for longer; however, in that case I'd focus more on teasing the content within the video rather than multiple goals. We already know that viewers watch because they believe the journey/direction of our video is what plays a huge role in whether they watch for longer or not; so I believe by highlighting those aspects, we'll be better at keeping them watching for longer rather than teasing singular moments that conclude. As a multiple goal solution; a great solution for multiple goals is to gradually introduce them. We start our video with a simple goal that is easy to follow, but as the creators journey evolves, they start to find multiple things they want. For example, get first place in a challenge while trying to keep their friend with them for as long as possible. At some point these goals may conflict, but that's a great example. Also, by gradually introducing goals, it's easier for the viewer to follow along and understand the importance of each goal individually I like these conversations as these kinds of insights make us think / re-think our current beliefs

@@mariojoos Yes, I think it's so important that they talk to strategists and KZbinrs more! Granular retention graphs would be a great tool. I think having the ability to export this data as a CSV or have a more data-rich API to link it to external software for further analysis would be great. The more KZbin can do to help creators make evidence based decisions to make better content, the more high quality content KZbin will start to garner. I think you and I may have misunderstood eachother's understandings of "goals" here. Based on your video, I thought you meant that a goal was something the *viewer* should achieve by watching the video (for educational content) or in other words - what is the benefit of learning the skill taught in the video? However, in your message above, it seems like a goal refers to the goal of the *character* in a challenge format video. If we follow the second definition, I definitely agree the drip feeding the rules, context and goals would be much better. However, if we follow the first definition of a goal, I would still consider (despite a lack of evidence) giving the viewer 3 reasons why they should watch this tutorial. But yeah, this is just my opinion - chose on a case-by-case basis I guess. My favourite structure for tutorial intros is: 1. "Today we are going to learn how to..." (deliver on title) 2. "Don't worry, you don't need to be an expert or need any special tools" (reaussure them that this video is suitable for THEM and allay any hesitations about watching it) 3. Now, let me show you what happens if you don't do this (give 1 - 3 examples of what they will lose if they DON'T watch your video). In this case, you don't frame it is what the viewer can gain from watching the video, but rather what they will lose from NOT watching it, leveraging loss aversion bias. Gotta love exploiting human psychology! This works ESPECIALLY well when the loss has an associated monetary value, high risk, or is high on Maslow's hierarchy. A KZbinr who does this well consistently is ChrisFix. You can pick any random video on his channel and there's a decent chance he'll use that format.

This message shows how an interpretation can change based on what kind of “goal” we’re referring to. Maybe, it’s an idea for us to start defining goals better! I like your tutorial intro structure
