I've seen this scene so many times and I've only just noticed something. There's not much to see, but I swear at 0:26, his arms start to go up ready to catch the cage. And the guy got in the way which is why his arms wrapped around him. I don't think he was thinking in the moment "What should I do here to appear normal." If he was thinking that, he had more than enough time to jump out the way at a normal, human speed. I think he went off instinct and was about to catch it.
