Really? MuseScore's playback is the best in the game by a country mile, and you didn't think that was an important address? With the Berlin libraries, it can replace your DAW.
@TheMusicalNotesOfficial
@TheMusicalNotesOfficial 4 күн бұрын
While playback is extremely important, the main focus of the comparison was to focus on the notational elements within each program! Each program can have their playback updated through a wide variety of playback engines. (i.e noteperformer for Sibelius and Dorico). However, MuseScore does have a solid playback, especially with those libraries. It is great that they can be comparable to DAWs. Have a wonderful, musical day!

Privet friends! MuseScore has surpasseed Finale few years ago already. Finale's demise is evident. Sibelius still surpase MuseScore, for now, but their is *one* big negative with Sibelius...their love for money! Sibelius' subscription and high price everytime and upgrade is released is what will eventually drag more users to MuseScore (or Dorico). It is evedent that Dorico is by far the best notator in the market...well...most of Finale's top pro musicians are joining Dorico's family! Thus, unless MuseScore can perform as well as Dorico, MuseScore most likely will stand second to Dorico. Eventually, Sibelius might follow Finale to the underworld! For those curious of NotePerformer 4.5. Follow the link here and discover the magic of NotePerformer. I cannot recall any VST sounding like a recording like this. The music in the linked video was produced by Dorico 5.1 Pro driving NotePerformer 4.5.0. The music performance can still be tweaked using Dorico's MIDI lanes, but the listener will definitely hear how NotePerformer is not this 'in-between', medium quality VST as some claims. NotePerformer has a lot of power, if one knows how to use its magic! kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5ergmiQgpl1l6c

All depends on the user's habits. I tried Dorico, but I am still learning it 🙂 I am writing occasionally only simple pieces with a few instruments or a choir setup. Then, the easiest for me is my trusty Noteworthy Composer 🙂 I know ... old, outdated, not updated since years, but to me it simply works, especially when using key commands instead of mouse clicks, as I am used to.

I’ve been using Sibelius for some years now on my Mac but I also have MuseScore that I dabble in from time to time and I also use Dorico on my iPad Pro but again, not a whole lot. For my major works, I try to incorporate them in all three programs as I complete them but Sibelius is the main one I use for everything including musical bits and pieces. But yes, it’s a good idea to learn more than one program.

As a Sibelius user, if I could afford to spare time to learn a new software, I'd definitely go for Dorico; not only because it's engraving features but also because what Avid did to the original team which I find to be unforgivable! Gotta appreciate Steinberg for having employed the team to build Dorico of which users, I hear, consider it to be superior to Sibelius.

INTERESTING that the video does not show a single example of handwritten scores! I have written many hand written scores in my time and the first big question was, "What is the best pen?" I bought many pens from shorthand pens to oblique nibs and finally I found that the best pen was "A FINE ITALIC NIB" quite common - but the trick is to use it with the pen horizontal to the lines of the stave so that by drawing the nib "down" you can produce a thin line for the stem - and you can draw the nib "across" to create thick beams. This method works well for most things especially sharp symbols with the two thin vertical lines and the two thick horizontal lines. Also a fine line felt pen is useful for drawing the bar lines and the Lyrics under the notes. Also what is the best ink? I found that the waterproof Pelican Ink was excellent - but you need to wash it very carefully after each use or the ink will dry clog up the nib. I found that "Water soluable Black Quink is good, but wind players may - in the act of playing - spit and dissolve the ink, so I would make a photocopy for the parts. JS Bach had the most beautiful music handwriting with curved beams to make the parts fit nicely around each other. The worst handwriting composer, I think, was Beethoven which shows the tremendous struggle he was experiencing when composing music. I am using "Finale" and "MuseScore" these days and have no desire to return to handwritten scores - as they are very time consuming and difficult to produce. Another point, many of the older music text books were written by hand - very carefully - and are worth studying. Jeff

@@erniebiggs8343 I honestly tried Muse Score and steinburg and I thought they were buggy and funky with midi and play back especially with VSL. Dorico was the only one left. If they toned down the obnoxious note entry with some custom switches to turn backward things off it could be usable. Finales note entry plays like fine musical instrument. It is not worth giving that up until the day finale ever dies

Not as long as adding a page break causes notes from one measure to literally collide *into the notes from the adjacent measure*, or adjusting beams causes stems to disappear entirely, it isn’t. Literallz every subscription offering a "free trial", does this. After your free time, it will automatically go over into a paid subcription. Apple TV for example. Are you saying, Apple TV is a scam?? If you don't actually READ the user agreement and if you don't take note of when the free trial runs out, it's not MuseScore's fault.

Musescore taking over sibelius may be sooner than you think. With Finale closing up shop, those users are going to be looking for a new home. Dorico is recommended, but even with the reduced price point, it's hard to beat the free musescore. Just some thoughts.

I was already using Sibelius when MuseScore 4 came out. As soon as this upgrade came out, my first thought was that if they keep upgrading like this, other notation softwares are really going to have to put some major work in, or MuseScore might take them out of business. Sure enough, Finale just died, and although they didn't specifically say it, I would not be surprised in the slightest if MuseScore is what killed Finale. If Avid doesn't start putting in some major work, I honestly would not be surprised if MuseScore became more powerful than Sibelius. I bought Sibelius during MuseScore 3, but if MuseScore was at MuseScore 4 at that point, I think I would have just stuck with MuseScore.

@@derekkane4574 MuseScore is also doing a lot more to accommodate Finale users and let them use something similar to a workflow they're used to. Dorico's workflow is completely different from anything else out there, much less intuitive, and takes a lot longer to learn. If there was ever a time for Dorico to start improving that, this is it; and they're not doing it.

Why measure numbers BELOW the measures' I the decades I had my engraving company, the default place for measure numbers was upper left of the measure.
@TheMusicalNotesOfficial
@TheMusicalNotesOfficial 26 күн бұрын
In the video, when I'm discussing measure numbers, I am talking about labeling each measure with its own symbol outside of rehearsal markings. That label can be placed below or above the score, and tend to happen at regular intervals (typically every measure in newer scores) for rehearsal clarity. For larger scores, sometimes it is nice to measure every number so no musician has to count every single measure. It is a preference (not a strict guideline), and I've typically seen it in full orchestral and wind band music. (not as common in chamber and solo literature) However, rehearsal markings (which can be measure numbers) do happen on the upper left of the measure! They tend to happen every few measures, typically at the beginnings or ends of phrases. Additionally, each measure at the beginning of each staff tends to be labeled in the top left corner in a smaller font. While these labels are similar to labeling every single measure, they might not be the same. However, labeling each measure at the top left is not wrong! Both can be right. I was probably taught to style my scores in a slightly different way?

what I would like to see is an experiment/competition: you need to enter a little music piece, say a one page Bach two voice invention, and let similarly experienced users enter the piece in their respective software and measure the time and amount of clicks/keystrokes needed to enter the piece. I believe GuitarPro would win and Finale would come last.

It's more complicated than that. Tantacrul has criticized all programs, and was kinda harsh on MuseScore too... then got hired to improve it. And improved it has, by a lot. The most important thing though is that even if it's worse now, open source software is always a better investment long term. If any company goes out of business, you are toast, while Open Source can be picked up again by anyone.

I did have a M1 MacBook Air a few years ago and used Sibelius exclusively but it stopped working a year ago so I got a M2 iPad Pro for composing music. However, Sibelius for iPad leaves a lot to be desired. It resembles nothing like the Mac version. The interface is awful and extremely limited. Now, I use Dorico and it’s simply better on the iPad. Way better! It’s not even a contest! The iPad version is very close to the MacBook version. The interface and layout is virtually the same although not full featured but really close. Dorico is simply superior over Sibelius on the iPad. The only thing I wish Dorico had for iPad is a world-class sound library like Spitfire, NotePerformer, or Berlin. The built-in libraries available are not the best but they sound fine but even that’s better than the tinny, thinness of the sound library for Sibelius for iPad. Nonetheless, Dorico is just miles better in every way than Sibelius if using an iPad in my opinion. However, I would LOVE to see Musescore 4 for iPad but only if it’s a near-virtual MacBook version.
