Hi, I’m going to be a HM in the reservist. I am planning on taking nursing school after “A” school and do my AT drills. Do I have to pick orders even if I’m in the reserves or is that only if I’m going Active Duty? Also what would be a good HM job to take for nursing?

as a 6 year paramedic/CPR instructor.....I would like to specialize in combat medicine and join as a corpsman since I have alot of trauma and pharmacology experience. How would I go about making the recruiter realize I want to do nothing else other than FMF/FMTB? isn't it a negotiation as well? how do they decide what rank to give you? does my past experience and certifications get taken into account when making their decision?

Do not go into HM for any branch. Certificates and licenses acquired in the military are useless in the civilian world. You will have to go to an accredited institution recognized by your state to practice any form of medicine. EMT certifications are not even recognized. "A" school is NOT guaranteed for every candidate, and if "A" school is offered, most likely it will be an occupation that you will not be interested in. Chances are that you will be attached to a Marine unit and become a field medic. My advice to anyone potentially interested in becoming a Hospital corpsman in the armed forces, is to take the college route. Get your undergraduates, consider graduate programs and medical schools in your states. As an HM you learn basic skills that are not even recognized in most states, and you will end up in college working for a degree to get accredited. I currently have an 8 year contract, 4 years active plus a 12 month extension totaling 5 years. The remaining 3 years are under individual ready reserve. Please really think about what you expect to get out of the armed forces when you plan on returning to civilian life. For those who want to continue a career in the medical field in the civilian sector YOU WILL NEED COLLEGE ACCREDITATION. Those who want to join the military for academic purposes or those trying to finish college degrees, be careful chances are that you will be forced to take online classes to do so. I do not regret my military experience, but I wish someone would have told me everything that I know now when I made my decision to enlist. (PO3)

I leave to boot camp aug. 22nd this year, then a school in Texas.. we can choose what hospital we want to work in? And if we're in a hospital, and say we want to eventually go overseas can we do that? And in a school do they go in depth with teaching what type of different medical teachings there are? For example like radiology, dental, do they teach all these subject in a school? Thank you so much, I really appreciate all the help you're giving me!

i went to HM A school in Great Lakes in 1993. awesome time, learned a lot. from there i went to Camp Lejeune for awhile then Hawaii. got out and went to nursing school and was an ER RN for a long time. HM school and the training i got in the fleet made nursing school a breeze.

When you become a corpsman man do they train you ? Like say you want to become a doctor when you get out or a nurse ? How would you go about that from being a corpsman? Do they have classes you can take on the side as if you were going to school still ?
