Hi Claire! I thought chocolate was a once a week necessity! The food prices where I am in ON CA are ridiculous. I mostly don't buy beef at all and hardly ever buy chicken because it hurts to buy 4 chicken breasts for $23.00. We love white beans and rice and eggplant and zucchini thyme casserole with a sprinkle of cheese. We love beans in all their forms except the tinned brown beans in sauce, but chickpeas, and lentils are great. Tinned tuna and lots and lots of broccoli are staples. Wish I had a garden. How is yours doing? PS Your hair looks super!

On Saturday I mostly just got some groceries and tried to recover my life in Canada, having been away since Feb in the deep south. Not as lovely as seeing bluebells, for sure! wow you struck a chord with me there - my mum passed away 15 years ago - she was of an era where food was sometimes very limited and always always kept a back up. When we emptied her house out there were cupboards full of tinned food. My and one of my sisters sat on the kitchen floor and sobbed our hearts out

BTW as the shopper and cook at home 2 things that are totally required ate eggs and onions - you have both and most of the stuff you need is in a cupboard at home

You could freeze one of those gammon for Christmas you got real bargains I'd never pay 2 .99p for a sausage mash in a Yorkshire pud the other gammon you could cut into slices and freeze or cook slice and freeze into so many slices in a pack for sandwiches or have gammon egg and chips one of my favorite quick meals

Is cross-contamination responsible for shortening (vegetable suet) not being gluten-free? Emotional support grapes FTW!🍇 (The grating frozen butter trick is always going to make tastier pastry, but shortening does make things flakier because it contains no water and has a higher melting point. But since trans-fats were banned, palm oil is used in shortening and margarines, and I always find anything with palm oil smells rancid and tastes awful.)

when mine were little I always got the reply to a certain statement - "oh my goodness how did you get your kids to eat broccoli/cabbage/apples/insert any other fruit and veg here " to which the answer was very simple - first you need to have the stuff in and cook it and present it where necessary or when they are looking for a snack say" we have apples/bananas/grapes etc why not have them" The big no-no is if there is something you don't like don't tell your kids because they will copy you and miss out on something they may actually find delicious

In desperation, I searched for ways to rescue unset jam - in my case, 5 litres of dandelion jam. I thought hours of picking and de-petalling work was going to be wasted. But, no!! I'm now beyond excited at this happy outcome. I'm rushing to the kitchen even now to get my dandelion homebrew started. My future self will be toasting you in thanks.

Talking of getting rid of stuff - wife is a bit of a hoarder I pride myself on clearing and dumping stuff BUT I retain one little reminder of my first born - a CD of MMMMBop by Hanson which is kept under the bed because they were my son's first words - I was feeding him in the high chair and he kept saying mmmbop ( it was on the radio at the time ) to encourage me to keep feeding him. He hates it when I remind him as he is now 28 but I am a soppy sod .................

Just got my first TGTG box, from Aldi, loads of fish, four pots of hummus, 😂, sweaty looking ham and chicken, very wrinkly peppers and some dodgy looking lamb mince meat, worth over thirty quid I reckon, I don’t really eat fish and really just fit for the bin, only cost three quid, so no great loss, hopefully better luck next time!

HFCS isn't readily available in North America; it's a commercial/industrial food product. The corn syrups you can buy for cooking and baking are not "high fructose," and, sadly, the golden variety doesn't taste anything like Lyles. Lyles used to be easier to find where I am in southern Ontario, Canada, but now it's really only available in specialty shops at offensively high specialty prices. These days, if I need golden syrup, I just make it from sugar and lemon.☺
