How do you communicate and talk to ATC and traffic?

Deaf pilots do have some limitations on their licenses. Their licenses are not valid for radio, meaning they cannot land at a towered airport except in emergencies. According to Sheila, "each tower has their own procedure, and so, it's important for us to reach out ahead of time and clear up that communication before we land, which is difference that people who can fly whenever they need to."

Inspirational. I have a paralyzed left hand & was wondering id I'd be able to fly. With one broken wing, It seems hopeless. But technology seems better. Worried about needing to adjust trim while handling the yoke.

I still used a slide rule in US Navy nuclear power school in 1977. We were one of the last classes to do so. I still have one, and use it occasionally.

This doesn't speak too well to the intelligence of the average student. I learned how to use a slide rule when I was 13, nothing to it. If a person understands math using logarithms then the slide rule is a lot more intuitive.

I'm 68 years old and we learned to use a slide rule in science class. To this day I think it's such a brilliant invention that it must have been given to us by aliens.

No slide rule ever stopped working because it got wet, or because the power supply failed. Don't lock yourself in a digital prison!

I have 4, growing knew what it was but the sliderule era ended before I entered high school. I have taught myself how to use them. It is a natural proportion machine and law of sines too.

The problem with MIT admissions... isn't the low acceptance rate, it's the fact that almost everyone who applies deserves to go there and is fully capable of getting in. It's completely out of your hands whether the cookie crumbles in your favour or not.

They should be teaching these young ladies about household economics and bringing up children, as anything else is wasted education on women. Women are much happier staying in the home caring for both their husbands and children as God intended. If you don't like this then simply prove there is no God. Good luck with that. But slide rules are very good and so easy to use.

Slide rules and log./trig. tables really drove home the importance of mathematical relationships and the fine art of simplifying expressions. Think before you start punching buttons.

The first Zeppelin engineers hired by Von Zeppelin probably used bamboo slide rules. A earned one unit of semester credit for taking the first week of the two week slide rule course, Fall '69, Shasta College. First week was just basic pre-trig. algebraic use. Second week, for an additional unit, was advanced, from trig. into calculus use.

Neal, I never would have expected to see and hear you again after 60 years, when I also took SM-Course XVI at M.I.T. Old memories came up and I recall admiring your disciplined and cooperative behavior between us students. Many best wishes from your German friend Peter Hamel, who uses his spare time after retirement to write books such as "In-flight Simulators and FBW/L Demonstrators" or "The Learjet History" (the latter together with another old US friend).

The key is to demonstrate “intellectual maturity”. Do things on your free time that show that you are passionate about learning. Yes you need to have very good to great grades and test scores but those in themselves won’t get you in. Lastly, in order to prove that you are who you are, you need good recommendation letters. So plan on finding projects where you can be mentored so that that person can champion you.
