Wrong, Freedom House EMS of Pittsburgh was the first. IAFF just chooses to ignore that part of history since they weren’t fire based and were black.

Thanks to the pioneers of modern EMS the Freedom House Ambulance service, Dr. Safar, Dr. Caroline, John Moon, and the other medics at Freedom House. It began in Pittsburg during the 1960s and was the first Paramedic service in the USA. They are responsible for many of the innovations in EMS today. American Sirens is a great book about Freedom House.

Physician's need to return to be more involved in the training of EMT's and paramedics. The physicians need to impart with their skill and knowledge to the trainees . It has been fifty years and EMS is still treated like the rotten red-haired stepchild of medicine. EMS has been too inclusive there needs to be standards other than taking and passing the National Registry Test. Not everyone has the ability to be an EMT or a paramedic. I feel also the EMT Basic curriculum needs to be expanded upon. There needs to be more emphasis on patient assessment, pediatrics, medical problems and trauma. The paramedic should have to perform an internship with a paramedic crew to test their knowledge and how the react to emergency situations to make sure they are truly competent to be a paramedic. In my experience for every one competent paramedic there are a couple that shouldn't hold the certification. These doctors helped create a wonderful program but there still needs to be work to make it even better.

With all due respect I do believe it was Freedom House. Look on the bottom of your medic books, it’s Nancy Caroline which was started in 1967/1968

Correct. Freedom House in Pittsburgh, PA was the first. Anyone claiming otherwise is denying historical facts.

Freedom house was no more “Paramedics” than funeral homes who offered first aid training. Fire Department were doing CPR and Resus since the 40s and 50s. It’s woke bullshit to push the “Freedom House” paramedic line. Regardless they definitely didn’t do telemetry and defibrillation like Miami did.

Not true. See Nancy Caroline Freedom House Ambulance started this entire idea. (1967) on year after the study by the NAS known as the "White Paper" was released, Dr. Nancy Caroline literally wrote the textbook on prehospital medicine. Here is a podcast about it. 99percentinvisible.org/episode/freedom-house-ambulance-service/

Yes, thank you! I was taken aback by the claim that Miami Firefighters were the "pioneers of EMS." This implies that they started EMS which they did not-- those at Freedom House were the pioneers. The beginning of the description of the video may be true, saying that they were the first FIRE DEPARTMENT in the United States to perform a particular life-saving procedure successfully. Later, they were given the green light to legally provide pre-hospital emergency care in the State of Florida. Their claim that "the Miami Fire Department became the first fire-based paramedic program in America" also may be true, but that isn't the same as being the pioneers of EMS.
