Sounds great , great feeling, there are many ways to play great pieces , Brendel is a very collaborative musician. So I'm sure Maderna and him went over the interpretive choices

There is so much to admire in this performance, it is hard to know where to start or to how to speak of it in the encompassing way it must be spoken of. The gist of it seems to be that every note is played exactly right, as if it knew its precise importance as part of the larger tapestry of which it is a part. It is not enough to speak of the clarity of the lines, the exquisite voicing of inner parts, the delicacy of the rapid passages. It is all this plus the exquisite intention of form from beginning to end, like a master storyteller's understanding of the precise meaning of every word he speaks in the spinning out of his tale.

Played with lots of passion, but too rushed (recording limit), misses the delicacy of the character of the ballade. It almost feels he is playing it against his will. This time Hambourg didn't impress me.

As revelatory as his Scarlatti. Simply breathtaking. Thank you! Any idea if Radu Lupu was a fan of Bartok’s playin. of Brahms? One of the most amazing recitals I attended was Lupu playing Bartok’s Out of Doors, sitting below the stage, looking up into the underside of the piano lid, the hammers appearing and fluttering like insects emerging from the night drawn by a light. A synesthetic experience almost. And such a tremendous interpretation.

The relationship of smaller shapes and phrasing to the different scales of the architecture of each piece are astonishing! And the virtuoso gusto and joy and freshness that surf on top of his formal intelligence. Like a Pollini and Cortot four-handed recital. I have not been so shocked and re-rooted in what is revealed about Scarlatti since Mikhail Pletnev. Thank you, universe!

Although I was never a fan of Pollini's playing (from his youth to his later years), the news of his passing was more than enough to make me deeply mourn the passing of a great man. His playing shown here has both rigidity and flexibility, and even after all this time, I am still in awe of this modern master. I cannot help but pray for his earthly glory and for his rest with God.

Lortat is the most characterful Chopin player I know but this anguished , furious performance will not be for everyone. Though it’s often misguided to read biography into music I can’t forget that the Frenchman who played cycles of Chopin in Paris and London was then gassed in the trenches during the First World War. After suffering for twenty years Lortat died from the effects, joining a generation of needlessly sacrificed soldiers on both sides. This Funeral March Sonata is uniquely angry; Lortat does not go gently into that good night. For a different side of Lortat listen to his whirling Chopin Waltzes and his virtuosic but profound Preludes and Etudes. Then remember that he also excelled in gentle Faure. But returning to this sonata remember as well the story we learned as children about the fury that produced Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude.
