Hi! I love your channel, thanks for all you do! I am currently teaching and hoping to transition at the end of the school year. Is this even a reasonable timeline? I have started studying and reading your book and plan to put in time every day. Thanks so much!
@SamTaylorEd
@SamTaylorEd Ай бұрын
Hey! Yes this seems like a reasonable timeline to me. There are lots of things you can accomplish during the school year, especially when it comes to getting your LinkedIn profile, resume, and work experience organized! Consider trying to lead a few extra professional development sessions for fellow teachers or departments, these are great for the resume. Hope this helps - and thanks for watching!

Hii, this was superr helpful. Thank you. However, I thought the actual project built on the authoring tool (articulate) would be linked to the portfolio site.

I have created onboarding trainings for my previous role but how do I include it in my portfolio without giving away company info?? 😊
@SamTaylorEd
@SamTaylorEd Ай бұрын
Thats a great question! One way to do this is to recreate the onboarding trainings but for a "generic" company, meaning create a fictional company and recreate a similar onboarding material for it. Or you can screen record the onboarding training and edit out anything that gives away company name or information. Hope that helps!

I struggle with knowing what is "familiar". The depth of knowledge is wide and deep. Does a YT basics video cut it? Do I need to take an online course? Do I need to get a demo trial of the software? I find this term vague.

Do you worry that AI would take away Instructional Designer jobs? I think I’m interested in transitioning from teaching to instructional design, but I worry about how AI will change the market.
@SamTaylorEd
@SamTaylorEd Ай бұрын
Thats a great question! I definitely do not worry about AI taking away from ID jobs. I use AI as a helper to create certain parts of training content, but it definitely cant do it all, especially without the prompt of an Instructional Designer. It needs an ID to ask it for the right things, and even then, most of the work AI produces needs a lot of reworking in order to get it right. Hope that helps!

I LOVE to go to learn at conferences! I want to go to all of them! DevLearn brochure looked great! But unfortunately it's so expensive, more than my prior profession! Are all these conferences over a $1,000?
@SamTaylorEd
@SamTaylorEd 2 ай бұрын
It is definitely expensive!! That’s why I rarely go to in person conferences but I want to! I think generally online/virtual conferences are more affordable. But Some companies have education stipends or will pay for professional development conferences - something to look into! And you’ve given me an idea to make another short on low cost/free conferences, so thank you!!
@Jennifer_63165
@Jennifer_63165 2 ай бұрын
@@SamTaylorEd I didn't know about online conferences were cheaper. I'll check that out! In my prior profession, conferences, student rates like $300 and professional were like $600 in person. And I've gone to when they were local to me, I live in a big conference area that many go to! And I went when my job pays for the hotel, conference, etc. So I thought they were prices like that for the 3 days. But I never so shocked when I looked at the DevLearn brochure. I was crushed! I'm just learning ID reading books, watching tutorials, taking free classes, etc. I don't have in my budget like $2,800 to attend a conference, so a low cost option would be great for career changers like me or early career would be ideal! I'm glad that this comment sparked the idea for free or low cost conference!!! Because we need more cost effective events! I love learning in conferences! I imagine that this would be a hit! I look forward to it! 😁

Thank you for the tips! They're super helpful! I work as a customer support lead for an education company and I've been interested in ID for a while now. I train new hires and I never thought about using the training materials I make to create a portfolio. Would you recommend someone interested in finding an ID job to invest in software like Articulate? (I have never used it before but some job listings require experience with this). Or is there any other software that you recommend?
@SamTaylorEd
@SamTaylorEd 3 ай бұрын
Hi! Thats awesome to hear, sounds like you have some really transferrable skills for ID! I don't really recommend investing in Articulate, I think you can accomplish a lot by creating a free (or low-cost) website, and then adding projects like videos, blog posts, training outlines/curriculum, and training slide decks. However, if you want to get a bit of experience with Articulate, I'd suggest watching a few KZbin tutorials and then signing up for a 1-2 week free trial to play around and create something using the software. Hope that helps!

I prefer mid size companies 300-500 employees like mine because you get the best of both worlds: you have the benefit of having structure but are not confined to a specific task or role. I notice that those very big companies 1000+ pigeon hole you and move very slow while start ups have you do so much that it’s overwhelming!

Hello! Thank you so much for your support! I would say if the job description asks for it, you should probably have experience building one or two courses/trainings with it (including creating the course modules, adding content, editing the style/structure of the course, navigating the course settings, etc.). I'd also suggest watching a few videos about how to use the software as you build. This could be done using a free trial of the software! Hope that helps!

Could you make a video about benefits? Health insurance is getting soooo expensive for US companies right now. Do you know anything about benefits by different industry? I suppose you could talk about tech benefits? I know about benefits in healthcare as I used to work in healthcare. I also read that on average, companies that employ more women, have higher premiums for their employees. In healthcare, as they usually have a higher percentage of women workers (mostly nurses) employees tend to have higher premium payments as a result. This is just from my personal experience working for a hospital system. They also had a tiered system for employees where those who made more also had to pay higher premiums, so even if you got a raise, you never really got that extra income.

Hi! Great question - unfortunately I am not qualified to speak on benefits at all! I still have to ping my HR team all the time to ask a million questions 🤦‍♀️ wish it wasn't so confusing!! As for other benefits, it really depends on the company. Some offer great other benefits like 401k matches and great maternity/paternity leave, but it really just varies company to company!
