Nice oven. I’m building pizza oven here in my yard. I’m quiet confused about ceramic fiber thickness also where shall I get it from
@frankinhiro2 жыл бұрын
I saw your video. Nice!! Looks like you live in Japan. The ceramic fiber was not cheap but I got it from this link. I got the 1260/130. I found cheaper ones on Amazon Japan but from China and I was worried about quality/harmful chemicals. www.isolite.co.jp/en/products/rcf/isowool-blanket/

The diameter of the dome is 88 cm. The ball I used was a 75 cm ball so actually it's a little small but it worked out fine. Thanks for stopping by and good luck on your project!

The stove works better for me when it's turned upside down. The wood is easier to load and gets more air. I rest the cup on a grill I made that fits over the stove.

I am considering growing some bamboo in my backyard in Ohio in a container. I like bamboo shoots and they're so expensive at the Chinese grocery store, over $5/lb including the part you have to peel away! This video was the most helpful I could find on harvesting and eating.
@frankinhiro6 жыл бұрын
Good Luck!! Make sure it stays in the container. If it goes wild, you're going to have bamboo growing through your floor. Enjoy!!

Is there anything similar that it tastes like when eaten raw without sauce? and what about bamboo that is growing tall? Could I pull a piece of bamboo for a staff and then cut it's root all the same and eat it? and when you cut the shoot as you did, is there anything left that reseeds and grows back? Great video! Thank you!

why do you need to keep the water running? what a waste.....
@frankinhiro9 жыл бұрын
+MasterofPlay7 As you can see, I frequently rinse off the knife and wet the stone. It becomes a pain if you turn off and on the water each time. Especially when my left hand is grimy from the stone.

what stones were you using?
@frankinhiro9 жыл бұрын
+MasterofPlay7 Actually, I don't remember the numbers. I usually just feel the surface in the store and pick the ones that feel right. Basically a medium and fine stone.

Raw bamboo sprouts have cyanide in them much like yucca root and should be soaked in water for at least 24hrs (changing the water a few times) and then boiled again in fresh water.
@alanheadrick79979 жыл бұрын
That's awesome, didn't know you could eat it raw. My wife cooks it very well when she eats it.
@sophiab64866 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you should. The last I learned about bamboo shoots is that they have a cyanide precursor which leads to toxicity after ingestion. You are supposed to soak them and then change the water a few times, then boil them in ample water. They are not safe to eat raw like you would an apple or carrot.

What I have there is just about all the is edible. after taking off the outer "husk" and shaving off the roots, this is all that's left that is edible.

frankinhiro Bamboo shoots may contain significant, potentially very toxic amounts of cyanogenic glycosides. Various reports even place bamboo shoots amongst the most potentially toxic plant materials, exceeding apricot, bitter almond stones and considerably exceeding that of cassava. However, the cyanogenic glycoside in bamboo is in fact taxiphyllin. Taxiphyllin is unusual amongst other similar compounds in the sense that it degrades readily in boiling water. Thus boiling bamboo shoots or cooking bamboo shoots should remove any problem...doesnt that mean you HAVE to cook it?
@frankinhiro10 жыл бұрын
richard mitchell No. I eat it raw every year and I'm doing just fine. As I mentioned in the video, it is considered a delicacy. But, is has to be immediately afer harvest and as everything else, done in moderation. Eating it raw is also mentioned in this newspaper article. Enjoy!! www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2014/04/15/food/springtime-for-bamboo/

Very helpful, Iv been entertaining the idea of hiking around japan in the remote areas trying to live off what I find as well as buying a bag of rice every now and agin. Im experienced in wildness living and edible plants but was having a hard time finding books about that of japan. What is the best time for wild edibles in japan?
@frankinhiro10 жыл бұрын
Hello There! What part of Japan are you in? I would say early to mid spring is the best. It pretty much ends the the takenoko in late April to early May. But, I like the myoga in the summer too. Have fun!!

Bamboo is poisonous when it's not cooked.
@frankinhiro10 жыл бұрын
Not true. As in the video, quite a few "bamboo hunters" eat it raw in the forrest. I guess if eaten in moderation... Thanks for the comment!!

maybe bamboo from another planet that is poisonous
@alanheadrick79979 жыл бұрын
phk0529 LOL, That's F'n funny!
@itsumonihon8 жыл бұрын
+frankinhiro actually it is poisonous - wiki it. there is a dangerous toxin which breaks down into cyanide in your bloodstream when injested raw. it is possible some people can handle this, or perhaps certain varieties of bamboo do not contain this poison, or it is also possible that certain growing areas don't contain the necessary conditions to allow the bamboo to create the poison. people do get sick from eating raw bamboo, though it's not well known.
@frankinhiro8 жыл бұрын
+itsumonihon No need to Wiki it. I eat it raw every year and so do thousands of people all over Japan. Here is an article in the Japan Times about eating bamboo shoots in Japan. Try reading paragraph #5. Come to Japan and give it a try. You'll love it. www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2014/04/15/food/springtime-for-bamboo/#.Vym3XtSLSXJ

The gray stone is a medium stone. You can cut with just this but not as sharp and won't last long. It's best to use the brown one (fine stone) to get a sharper and better looking finish. Thanks for the question!!
@mayamaldarelli282311 жыл бұрын
Nice video! Thanks so much :) I've got a fine wet stone, knowing that I should have a medium to start. I love your technique, delivery. Great video man, nice job :) Would you sharpen a machete the same way, with the same stones? Seems like I need a less razor edge on the machete. Anyway, just a question. Mostly, I wanted to say thank you. And to say how "natsukashi" your kitchen is. I had the chance to live there for a spell. I loved it. I miss it. Ando-san ;)
