My dad was a graphic designer and did just about anything design and art could be on. He was old school when everything was drawn by hand and pasteups and mechanicals in the 1970's through 1990's. You left out a very important group of designers in design history that if you want to be a good designer they should be looked at. I'm kind of disappointed you did not cover them because most of today's design is a return to what they were doing in the 1960's through 1980's. Look at Alexander Girard, Paul Rand, Art Chantry, Milton Glaser, Mike Salisbury, John Van Hamersveld, Raymond Loewy and Chip Kidd. They set the bar and are still very relevant. You have got to know this work if you are doing graphic design.

Great video! For my job, I regularly contract freelance designers and as much as a flashy website is impressive, it’ll always be the work itself that is the most important thing. I don’t know if I can say the same for a design studio, but I think it bares repeating for anyone seeing this and feeling crumby about their portfolio.

I worked as a freelance designer for 2 years and for a creative agency for 3 years, until things reached a dead end for me. In this period of searching for a new job, not receiving any responses from the places I've applied to made me question my career. After watching your video, I remembered why I love being a designer again. Thanks a lot for that!

Hey Jesse! I needed some inspo to start fresh after deciding that I’m definitely starting my career as a graphic designer and your video was the first one a clicked on…it’s been a while since last time I watched something related to the industry…I just wanted to thank you for your raw content about freelancing. All the best bro 💕

This is hilarious because I just started a new social media job at an art glass store with occasional design work and their logo uses bebas neue. I didn't realize how overused the font was. But I definitely noticed their logo needs a redesign and they have virtually no brand identity..their "brand identity" looks straight out of the 90s and not in a good way....but they're boomers and convincing them they need a brand identity and logo redesign is off the tables...for now...

That stuff is all cool to look at but who actually hires people to make stuff like this? I can't imagine many businesses paying for this kind of work and other artists and creatives don't pay well unless they are super successful and getting clients like that is rare.

Great video! Cool to see and hear what you think of the different portfolios :) Could I maybe suggest though, if you do more of these videos in the future, that you leave links to the portfolios you've checked out in either the description or in like a pinned comment or something? Just in case people like me wanna check them out for themselves :D

Thanks for the video. Is it possible for the next one to turn off that Pinterest plugin, it's so distracting when you hover over every image that that red logo pops up in the top left, kind of takes away from people's designs. You are probably immune to it, as it's your computer. 🤠
