Yes, you can drive it until the engine fails. If the noise goes away once warmed up that's a bonus.

Yup. Its the most common issue on elantra 1.8 L engines built from 2010 - 2016 but had never heard one sound this bad 😳 I got a 2012 with 80 000 miles on it, does have minor piston slap noise, doesnt burn oil and i do all my oil changes within 5000 mile intervals. I live in canada so i have to put 5w20 oil in winter time, but i will start putting 10w30 in the summer to hopefully mittigate slap damage and extend engine life.
