I miss singing this song!! I remember learning this, trying to figure out his handwriting because we didn’t have a published copies!! Maestro Gibbs is an amazing musician to learn from, I was blessed to work with him at RVC. ❤

I am so grateful that the original song by William Dawson is still around. This is so complex. Moses Hogan is doing an extraordinarily good job.

This was one of my favorite songs for our Christmas Concert. Choral singing is so under-appreciated.

I love the dynamics and the crisp cut offs. I performed this in high school and have struggled to find a recording that gave me the same feels. You guys nailed it! Go Detroit!

It doesn't matter who I hear sing this song, no group I've heard yet can hold a candle to these students. Great job, they've outdone themselves. Truly amazing. Can't beat God given!

Great sound, but it's slow and dragging. I feel like this spiritual should move, so that it contrasts with the midsection.

The music is great. The "video" is awful. Static & out of focus. A disservice to the music.

This is probably the best rendition of this piece of music ever sung. Who arranged this piece of music, it so beautifully done. The chords and arrangement are superb

The Rutgers Glee Club sang this version outside of Prague in '71 on the anniversary of the Russian invasion in '68. In the town of Karlovy Vary some 5000 people crowded into the square. Most all Czechs speak English and fully understood the power and meaning of the song. People were openly weeping as they grasped the depths of their own slavery under the Russian dictatorship at that time. When we finished on that last powerful chord, there was complete silence for 3,4,5 seconds, then an explosion of cheering and screaming. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life.
