i read that during development, they fully intended for Quake 2 to be an entirely different IP, but they couldn't find a name that stuck, and decided to continue with Quake. Makes sense that much of the team wouldn't be particularly happy with Quake 2, 3, and 4 having the original Quake name and none of the Gothic, Lovecraftian horror themes.
