here is some historic fact, Victor McLaglen actually was in the British Army that took the port / city in Turkey, in fact he was British Captain, and in control after the campaign was completed. He was a highly decorated combat soldier.

When Lawrence is accosted by his senior officer, a bully, [a Major?] who threatens to throw his young Arab companion out of the mess, Lawrence forcefully seizes his arm and firmly resists. You will also notice that the officer's eyes look down at the Arabian curved dagger carried by Lawrence who unquestionably makes it clear that he will use it if he must. Lawrence wins this power play between the two of them or is it between Lawrence and the military establishment which is insinuated from the moment they are dropped off outside the mess.

Lawrence's renown and reputation were so high, King George V was rightly awed by him. He was summoned to the Palace to be offered a Knight of the Garter. He turned it down. The King said "Well then, how about the Order of Merit?" (an even higher honour). He turned that down too. I don't think he was offered the Victoria Cross, not sure why not, but he would have turned that down as well. The reason was highly relevant to today's world - not pride, nor excessive humility, but disgust with the British and the British Empire, because conflicting promises had been made to the Arabs and to the Jews, both promises could not be honoured, and it was the Arabs who were Lawrence's comrades who got thrown under the bus. The rest is history.
