So I’ve been doing false chords for a few months now. Practicing consistently 4 out of 7 days just bc I only practice in my car on my way to work and back. Half an hour in the morning and half an hour later in afternoon. I’ve came to this video bc I feel like over time trying different methods and trying to do highs, and tunnel throats I must have started to engage too much of my true folds and it got into my muscle memory so therefor it messed with my lows so bad and I couldn’t get out of it. So I’m coming back to the basics to get back in the groove of mainly using false chord distortion. I know it’s okay to use a little bit of true chords as long as I don’t use too much force but since I had it in my muscle memory and used them too much I for now want to eliminate using them as much as possible. So for practicing these simple false chord exercises how long do you feel would be good to practice before I move along to the next thing? A week two weeks??

Well since you have experience using your false cords, you might learn faster than a novice. Go based on feeling. Something that I did not consider at the time of making this guide is that not everyone will perform kargyraa in a way that is optimal for FC screaming. I have had lessons with people where they use too much tension (aka compression) in their upper throat and larynx which causes them to have a tighter sounding kargyraa and too much true cord engagement. So I have this exercise that I thought of after creating this guide. I have had success with using it to help people find the perfect placement of their false cords and perform kargyraa in a way that more closely resembles FC screaming. If you email me, I can send you the exercise and I think it will make a lightbulb go off in your brain. ‼️I was trying to get the technique for a week. I listened to this on my ride home from work and was singing (no screaming though) in a nice emo fry voice in that amount of time. Not a joke post, Uber driver can vouch.

@@PrisonMike-_- it sounds like he’s getting his distortion by using the fry scream technique, but he’s really only dipping his toes and not really leaning too hard into a fry scream. I would say it’s more similar to a pitched fry scream. just based on how powerful his singing voice sounds, I think that practicing belting and singing with a lot of power while also trying to keep your laryngeal muscles relaxed is the key to singing like he does. It kind of reminds me of Spencer Chamberlain on Underoath’s old stuff where Spencer would occasionally sing and quickly switch into a fry scream. I didn’t get really good at fry screams until I learned how to sing like this and then my fry screams came much more naturally to me.

Do you think chord closure has anything to do with it as well? I like to think of three vocal chord closures, one being found in regular chest/head voice singing where the chords are touching as they oscillate (regular singing, belting), another being falsetto closure (possible in head and chest resonances) where the chords are parted open slightly to allow for more air flow (gives it the breathy sound) and finally the fry position that lies in between these two closures. I imagine the muscular tension required to raise the PTP is created not only by the isometric contraction you've pointed out but also by the posterior cricoarytenoid muscles that are responsible for true fold closure. Also if you think about a pitched fry scream, is it the case that the tension between the thyroarytenoid muscles and vocalis muscles must be different. Say you were using the perfect amount of air pressure that would cause the vocalis muscles to crackle (fry) but thyroarytenoid muscles to oscillate like normal. This would mean the PTP of each would be different due to a very delicate difference in the tissue tensions. What do you think of this?

I think you read my mind with most of this. I just didn't want to go so deep in the weeds on something that I'm not 100% certain of. The degree to which your vocal cords come together likely does play a role and there needs to be some closure in order to for the true cords to make any noise at all, but I think the majority of the mechanism happens due to building up tension in the true cords during isometric contraction of the lengthening/shortening muscles. However the posterior CA muscle opens the true cords and the lateral CA muscle closes the true cords. So another agonist/antagonist relationship. These muscle pairs probably also work together isometrically to hold the true cords in a specific position to maintain a certain degree of closure during fry screams. This website shows the actions of most of the muscles and how they affect the true cords. Just scroll halfway down to the subtitle "muscles of the larynx" and look through the pictures on the right side of the screen. www.kenhub.com/en/library/anatomy/vocal-cords Now I certainly feel as if the medial muscle fibers in my true cords (aka the vocalis muscles) are more active than the lateral muscles of my true cords when I fry scream. It feels as if the medial margins/surface area of my true cords tense up more, while the lateral surface area is allowed to freely vibrate. But the PTP will change depending on the amount of overall tension. The way I think about it is like this. soft fry distortion: very little air pressure needed, so very little tension is needed as you are already very close to the PTP anyway. Full power fry scream: lots of air pressure so more tension needed to raise the PTP above the air pressure that you are using to get loud. Pitched fry scream: lots of air pressure, but slightly less tension needed so that you can be slightly closer to the PTP, but still just below it. Its like you are dipping your toes into the fry register, and very slightly slowing down the true cord vibrations so that you can still hit notes but also produce a hint of distortion. Hope that makes sense.

@@Scream-Theory It makes perfect sense. Very interesting there are two different muscle groups potentially responsible for the isometric contraction we see raising the PTP (posterior CA + lateral CA / Thyroarytenoid + cricothyroid). And in order to get smooth distortion (high frequency percussive noise) there is a balance between tissue plasticity and elasticity. I think this relationship is found between the vocalis (plasticity causing fry crackle) and thyroarytenoid muscles (elasticity increasing frequency). I think you're right it's found on this very delicate point where we "dip our toes" into that blend found at the right PTP. You should write a paper on this and do some laryngoscopies lol.

@@Fryingpan-b1o I would love too but I have reached out to every ENT clinic in my city and every college with an SLP program within 100 miles of me to see if I can get an endoscopy done while I scream, and every single one of them has either refused or nobody was interested in helping me. It's honestly been kind of depressing.

Edit: I see you have videos on the anatomy and possibly some of the other questions so I'll check those out! I have some questions if anyone knows the answers to them and is able to help (I'll list them as numbers so they're easier to reference): 1. Are fry screams considered pitched? Are false cord screams considered pitched? 2. Is pitched screaming essentially "true fold singing + false cord screaming"? When doing a pitched scream, should the sounds of true fold singing and false cord screaming blend together or should they stay separate? 3. Can you only really do pitched screams at the overlap in your modal and falsetto registers? 4. Is mixed screaming pretty much the same as a pitched scream? 5. Can you do pitched mixed screaming? 6. Should the fry sound happen above, below, or to the side or etc. of false cords? Iiuc fry screaming is from compression and so I'd think we'd have to push air first through the false cords because false cord screaming needs a lot of air and then do fry screaming's compression with muscles above that. But I haven't seen much definitively on that. This is such a [I feel like unnecessarily] confusing space with such confusing terminology. I thought your video did a good job making things clear and to the point. Thanks!

Thanks for your comment. Ill try to answer your questions as best as i can. 1.) Most people refer to a pitched scream as any scream that layers distortion over a discernable note. Both techniques allow you to do this. 2.) You are describing a pitched false cord scream. Its basically just singing while trying to vibrate your false cords above. It can give you a bit of grittiness in your singing voice. Go watch my vocal cover of Melancholy by SOI and listen to the chorus part where I sing. That's an example of me singing while lightly vibrating my FC's (except when I say the word "cast" that is a fry scream) 3.) It depends. I think that might be the case for pitched fry screams. With pitched FC screams, I personally can make my FC's vibrate independently of what my true cords are doing. 4.) I havent heard the term "mixed screams" but it might be another term for "hybrid screams" AKA FC and fry screams simultaneously. 5.) Kind of. I can do a pitched fry scream while lightly vibrating my false cords. 6.) False cord screaming does take a lot of air pressure but with many hours of practice it will eventually require significantly less air pressure. This is due to tissue adaptations of the false cords/arytenoid cartilage and also figuring out the perfect positioning of your mouth and throat. My advice is to pick one technique and spend a 1-2 years practicing it until you feel very strong with it, and then begin working on the other. Lastly, don't get caught up in all the terminology. Depending on where you look for information on distorted vocals, you will find many different, even contradicting ideas. As long as you know that fry screams are produced by the true folds, and false cord screams are produced by the false cords (maybe even some contribution from the arytenoid cartilage) then that's all you need to know. Both techniques can allow you to achieve extremely similar vocal styles. Both can be used to produce super brutal/demonic sounding lows, mids, and highs. Both can allow you to do pitched screams, and even more human sounding, emotional screaming styles.

I don't think it feels similar to throat singing, but that's just me. By normal vocal fry, do you mean the pronounced clicking sound, or the relaxed "cat purring" type of vocal fry that I spoke about in the video? When you get the distortion, especially with soft fry screams, it's hard to describe. It just feels "right", like you cut through wrapping paper and the scissors just start perfectly shearing through the paper. I had one student that described it as a "thin veil over the true cords" . Although it's vague, that description makes sense to me and puts the sensation into words.

Thanks for that!! It makes completely sense for me, especially the part with air pressure and how it affects the sound. The concept that I need to go a bit down with the air pressure to reach the fry scream just helped me a lot - I always tried to give more flow than for the cleans, now with this concept of reducing the flow it just worked so amazingly well and with much less effort 😎 you just helped me develop one step further, I am very grateful for that!!

one thing: great info BUT this is just vocal fry screams. i hate the name fry. u can create fry distortion with just about any cartilage in your throat. if u do Khovu Kargyraa and add pressurized air. boom u get the deathcore style fry scream. (falsecord fry) NOT false cord scream. also will ramos uses this technique as well as Dag Kargyraa to fry. (Khovu is Khoomei throat singing and Dag kargyraa throat singing at same time)

Dag Kargyrra is typically the one taught to learn falsecord screams and khovu to learn “compressed” falsecord screams, only thing that turns these techniques into fry is the air u use. open air to fog a window or whatever=falsecord scream, pressurized air=fry scream. i like this terminology better it makes more sense. srry for the info dumping just need to get it out of my head lol

I hear what you are saying but this is where I disagree. I have seen this argument many times. Yes, you can make the false cords and even the arytenoid cartilage vibrate either faster or slower to produce a smoother or rougher/gurgly sounding distortion. The smoother sounding distortion is what some people refer to as fry distortion. But in reality, this is just a different variation of a false cord scream (or arytenoid cartilage screaming depending on which tissue you are using). I agree, it would be better to call it something else, like "Smooth false cord screams" and "rough/gurgly false cord screams". But either way the distortion is coming from the false cords. I actually demonstrated an example this towards the end of my Ben Duerr analysis video. What I and many others consider to be actual fry screams are solely produced by the true cords, which creates that raspy/screechy distortion. Each vocal structure (true cords, false cords and arytenoid cartilage) has different mechanical properties that results in different qualities of the sound. You can produce a similar sounding distortion with the false cords but it still won't sound 100% like how an actual fry scream sounds, and this is the crux of all the confusion between how distorted vocals are classified in different communities of distorted vocal enthusiasts. I have been planning to make a video on this for a while now. It will probably be the next video I make. But the best example I can provide right now is this. Listen to the voices of Dan Watson from Enterprise Earth, or Darius from Spite. Both of these guys primarily fry scream using their true cords. Listen very closely to the quality of the distortion. This is what I mean by the raspy/screechy sound of a fry scream. Fry highs typically sound very screechy, and the fry lows have a slightly different quality to them that I can't quite put into words. Then listen to Scott Lewis of Carnifex and Jason Evans of Ingested. Both of these guys primarily use their false cords. Once again listen closely to the quality of their distortion and you will be able to hear the fluid/hollow overtones of their false cords vibrating.

@@Scream-Theory ok, i can understand your point of view on that, i personally choose to avoid true cord distortion because its sketchy to me. but if it sounds good and doesnt hurt then go for it. i just bring it up because ive been trying to learn screams learning this technique for years and was only when i switched to the techniques i mentioned that i started making progress. i can do the vocal fry scream, it just feels very limited in sounds in comparison. i am very interested in learning the “vocal break” scream or whatever its called haha the one M Shadows and Chester Benington do

@@ShaunTheStickbug So that style of scream is typically referred to as a "pitched fry scream". I created a fry screaming exercise program for free if you look at my videos. In it I provide all the exercises needed to develop the skills that make fry screaming easier to learn. Part of the progression I use to help people get those deathcore style from screams is to actually learn to do a pitched fry scream first. I am a physical therapist so building exercise programs for complex motor skills is within my wheelhouse. Check out the videos and I promise it will get you closer to that goal.

I just hope it’s not too click baity lol. also, I forgot to respond to your question about feeling your back muscles more than your abdominal muscles when you exhale. well the core includes your low back muscles too. But you should really be feeling most of the force being produced by your abs. this makes me wonder if perhaps you have something going on with your posture. because I met someone one time who had the same issue except he was getting more of a low back soreness/ache when he screamed. I asked him to show me his posture from the side and basically he had “lower cross syndrome”. It’s essentially a muscle imbalance that is super common and you’ll start to notice that a lot of people have it. it’s due to having weak abdominal muscles, tight hip flexors, and tight low back muscles. The treatment for this is essentially to strengthen the abs and to stretch the hip flexors. try this and see if it helps. Just look up some hip flexor stretches and try those core exercises I mentioned in the screaming guide.

@@Scream-Theory Oh, thank you. Yes, when I sing while using correct breathing I feel soreness in my lower back more than in my abs. What you said is very likely to be the cause, I've been going to the gym for a few years, but have started training abs just recently by doing mostly declined situps and my hip flexors get very tired and sore, much before my abs do. They're probably tight as hell but I'd never thought this was the cause. I'll look into stretching them, thank you!

Another good video, I love the "geeking out" part because it shows the BTS of fry screams. And, of course, tutorials and exercises are very important, but to get the full picture you need such in-depth biology information. And I still wonder why your channel is not more popular. People having short attention span? Needing results now and fast? Learning metal vocals is and should not be a quick endeavour.

Thank you and I definitely agree. I am a very analytical person and I need to know all the small details about something in order to properly learn it. I kind of just make the videos that I wish I had when I was 15 years old trying to learn to scream. I think part of the reason my channel isn’t huge yet is because I don’t do this full time and I suck at marketing. I also recently learned that a bunch of people in the r/screaming sub reddit and discord server don’t like me. I’ve seen people in there claim that I ruined my voice by using bad technique. one of my students actually shared my fry screaming program in the screaming subreddit and someone responded and claimed that I pay bots to comment on my videos to boost my channel. This is because he saw that you had commented on all 4 of those videos and assumed that you are a bot that I pay to comment on my videos. I find it funny because all he had to do was click on your name and see that you created your channel 18 years ago. but don’t let that dissuade you from commenting because I love your comments. Haters gonna hate.

This guy even claimed that he messaged you through youtube (despite youtube not even having a private messaging service in 15 years) and said that he got no reply so that proved you are a bot. This guy then attempted to message my student, and try to convince him to stop taking lessons with me and instead take lessons from him, in which he wanted to charge twice the rate of what I charge. Idk what some peoples problem is.

​@@Scream-TheoryThe screaming discord is known to be very toxic, the owner himself from what I've seen is a mean narcissist. For them, youtube videos are all wrong while the "pinned messages" are the holy bible of screaming, too bad that they are just an unorganized list of mostly useless stuff that don't even explain techniques separately, the server is also hard to navigate. Cult of metal is a much better place, but they teach a fry that is supposed to be a combination of vocal chord closure and false folds vibration but I am not sure. But yes, don't even bother about those people

@@panema0 if you check my channel, I recently created an entire exercise program to help develop these skills. in phase 2, I included footage of my private lessons with students where they initially figure out how to produce the distortion so that you can see a beginner going through the process.

Thanks for this video. Will definitely give it a try. Now there is something weird im not sure why is it, but there are days were I can actually scream really good which are... not quite often. And most days I really feel like my scream sounds weak, or I just cant keep it. Is there any advise you may have for that?

Thank you. This is an old video and I have recently made a fry screaming exercise program that blows this out of the water. I highly recommend following the exercise program, which you can find in my videos. As for your issue, I can't say for sure what is causing it without hearing how you scream. it could be due to improper technique, or it could be due to other factors like hydration, how often you practice/rest, stress, and lack of sleep. But every musician will have good days and bad days. Over time and lots of practice, you will have more good days than bad days, and your vocals will sound better on your bad days too.

So here's the thing. I have seen many videos of people talking about the epiglottis distortion, but every time they are actually using their false cords or their arytenoid cartilage. It is possible to make the epiglottis produce noises. Just try to make a throaty croaking sound, pretending like you just got shot in the chest. You can produce a grotesque sound like you are aspirating blood, but I don't think any vocalists actually use the epiglottis as a primary source of vocal distortion. The epiglottis is not designed to produce noises. It's designed to prevent us from choking on whatever we swallow. The cartilage of the epiglottis is elastic cartilage, which is also what ear lobes are made of. It is springy and bounces back to its original shape when moved. So someone who is actually using their epiglottis to produce noises, practicing for a long time, may develop a swallowing disorder due to changing the tissue properties of the epiglottis (making it more fibrotic due to repeated stress). So my honest opinion is that all of the elite vocalists aren't using their epiglottis to produce distortion. They are just really good at fry/FC screaming and using their arytenoid cartilage. You can produce such a wide variety of effects with all 3 of these techniques, and some people might be confusing those sounds as coming from the epiglottis. However, It is safe to use the epiglottis to influence the shape of the throat. For instance, with the tunnel throat technique, the epiglottis is put into a cylindrical shape, and you can see this in Brandon Kennedy's laryngoscopy. In this case, the epiglottis isn't producing the noise, but simply changing the shape of the vocal tract. But overall, Yes you can produce noises with the epiglottis, however its kind of gimmicky, and doing it for long periods of time may not be safe. Elite vocalists aren't building their careers on flapping their epiglottis. In reality, I think they are just really good at FC, fry, and arytenoid cartilage screaming and that allows them to produce really cool effects that some people confuse as coming from the epiglottis.

@Scream-Theory thanks for all the info. I'm just curious as to the potential to use it. I'm sure you know the song what a wonderful world by louis Armstrong. I'm pretty sure that's the epiglotis at work. Also, one of the singers from dystopia, if you listen to the song "self-defeating prophecy," he's using his epiglottis, his voice sounds really nasaly. Tbh I don't even think it's safe to use from my experience it doesn't get conditioned as effectively as the fc and no matter what ends up hurting, probably because it puts stress on some unmaliable throat parts idk. I could be wrong, but those examples are done using the epiglotis and not anything else right, I mean the main flap fluttering. Or am I wrong and they are just using their fcs.

@@Fryingpan-b1o what Louis does is called the "jazz growl". Here is a page from complete vocal technique research that talks about how the jazz growl is produced by the arytenoid cartilage. The epiglottis is involved by closing over the top of the larynx, but its not the structure that is producing the sound. cvtresearch.com/description-and-sound-of-growl/ I also listened to the song by Dystopia. It sounds like he is using his FC's, just with a ton of true cord engagement.

Thank you! Unfortunately the DPT degree is not a phd. I would have to do another 3 years of school for that. It’s considered a clinical doctorate degree which is kind of a dumb distinction but I appreciate your kind words. I’ll take a look at Tom Barber’s style. I haven’t spent a lot of time practicing to him but it sounds like he heavily bases his distortion on false cord screaming.

I made this video two years ago and I’ve learned a lot more since then. The exercise program is straightforward and will show you exactly what skills you need to develop in order to fry scream.

Thank you for the video! I've found the way to activate my false chords using just a little bit of air, but my current problem is that when I swallow saliva it's hard to re-locate the feeling I and have to work it for a few seconds to reactivate them again, do you have any advice for this problem? Thanks ✌

Well the first question I have is, how long have you been practicing with your false cords? What you are describing would not be out of the ordinary for a beginner, but most people start to get pretty good control over their false cords in 2-4 weeks of regularly using them. @@Scream-Theory well actually I've been totally focused on learning how to fry scream first but this friday I saw a tutorial of Daniel Wu about false chords and follow his steps, I've notice a pretty comfortable vibration wich also I've a lot of control over it, it's the exact same effect you show at the begining of the video, so I combined what I learned about fry scream with this effect and I got a pretty good distortion and control, but when I swallow saliva I lost this vibration aproach and I have "search it" again. Thank you! I willl send you an email right away
