Good advice; also, Steven Pressfield’s “The War of Art” is worth reading for avoiding issues like this.

The joy of fiction writing: I like fiction writing because you can write without disrupting the right lives of your subjects for example me and Jasmine had been married for 10 years the traditional American Dream her being prom queen and me the varsity football star but one day our son discovered my shotgun and accidentally killed himself, our marriage dissolved in a divorce

Love your video as you gave a lot of useful and insightful tips. Will be using some of it for a flash fiction that I am working on.

Flash Fiction, much like Drabble and any short stories format, are as abused as Haiku. There is nothing wrong writing them but short doesn't mean easy. It needs substance! Short stories that act like idea or description of escaped events are valueless. I would use this format for draft. I believe this format works better for humor.

You're right - it may be a form that's deceptively easier, but it certainly still takes time, revision, and careful honing. Though I would argue that it's easier than writing/revising longer stories and novels in that it's easier to work with something that's 1000 words (and take that piece through all parts of a revision process) than something that's 100,000 words. So purely in that respect, it's easier for most writers to tackle.

I have an idea for a flash fiction story. In fact, it's not yet even a full idea but just a basic concept and idea for the ending. I've never written anything before and I'm dumb as a box of rocks. What do I do next?

Just write it. Write the first draft. It will probably be bad, but you will have something on paper that you can mold into something better. Don't doubt yourself. Just write :)
@pioneervalleywriters
@pioneervalleywriters 3 ай бұрын
Yes, just begin putting words to paper and get a first draft down. Then, read it aloud to yourself, listen to the sound of the sentences, trust your gut about changes that need to be made, take space from it when you can no longer see it objectively.

I love the idea of having to write many drafts. The heart of my story is revenge. It seems that Flash Fiction could almost be a blurb at the back of the book, that introduces a reader to the story. Would that be accurate? Anyway, I'm gonna give this a try. I've been wanting to solve a story dilemma for a while. This may have done it! Thanks!
@joybaglio37

So happy you found it helpful, Johanna! I hope it helps with your story dilemma! (I find whenever I get experimental in my editing, I usually see something I previously missed, and the path forward opens up again.) Flash is it's own form, and really great flash fiction stands on its own, but you can certainly apply the editing/compression skills to writing blurbs and other succinct, tiny pieces of writing. And you can certainly apply these skills to chapters within books and to scenes themselves. Good luck!

You could think of flash as a blurb, in that it's short, though in some ways that might throw you off, as a blurb by it's nature summarizes and avoids specifics - details and moments - and flash is full of these. It might be clearer to think of flash as a story centered around a specific moment or event (though of course this is just one approach).

Any advice on how to write a book on the philosophy of history? As in something that is more of a broad-scope, and generalist (i.e. something akin to Toynbee).

Well done! You make the important point that they're not so easy to write, almost always require revision. And you could point out the many fine examples to be found in the three (named) Flash Fiction anthologies, published by W.W. Norton. Books made for students.

Hola Sara! I want to work with you one day soon, as I am returning to "my writing self" after a lengthy hiatus of parched grass. From the hand of time above, I have been away from reading your online work for three weeks now. My space for writing creativity gobbled, again, but I will not make excuses. I will do what I must, email you, have something to offer up to work with and honor my creativity time to show up, daily.

Combining meditation and writing sounds interesting, especially since I'm fond of both. I meditate to gain control over my emotions. I suffered panic attacks as a teenager. I continue to battle social anxiety. I learned early that what I draw attention to is the cause of both. I use meditation as practice to controlling what to be attentive to. Whenever I feel anxious, I draw my attention to my breath. On the inhale, I focus on the air rushing into my nostrils. On the exhale, I search for any tension I can find in my body and release it with the air leaving my lungs. I continue this cycle until my mind is calm and all anxiety has left me. Since I like to both meditate and write, I will experiment. Too bad I don't live nearer. The workshop sounds interesting.

Thanks for your comment, Mark! I agree about the helpfulness of meditation in handling anxiety and many emotions in general. And glad you're going to experiment with meditation and writing. There is a real opportunity for some overlap. Good luck with both your writing and meditation practices!
