I'd like to assure you, I have an elite reputation, lots of motherly emotion and even a financial risk weighing in the balance for every social exposure event I allow for my puppies. Here, below, is a link to an article that helps unpack your concerns (and here's a quote: "...For this reason, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the standard of care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated."). The bottom line in this article is that risk of injury or premature death is higher for unsocialized dogs (beginning in puppyhood) than the risk, for the same, during early socialization before being fully vaccinated. As long as puppy care professionals weigh independently all the risks and take appropriate and reasonable precautions, the gains of early socialization far exceed the risks. Tecager, thank you for asking. That is a good question. As you know, some dogs respond agressively when startled awake. While that can be understandable, it isn't safe for households with children or other pets, who may accidently awaken a resting adult Berner (90 - 100+ lbs) Part of our AKC Bernese Mountain Dog Ranch Buckaroo 101 training is to condition puppies to startle awake, without showing any agression. This not only keeps memberts of thier house hold safe, but it also keeps the berner safe from the need to surrender or rehome him/her if the agressive behavior upon being startled awake becomes a danger to those in the household. It's a win-win for everyone. Frida is the puppy in this video. She did graduate from our Buckaroo 101 program, mastering being startled awake without agression and then back to rest...but to keep that conditioning sound, I periodically startle her awake while she remains in our Buckaroo Honors training program.

That's why our placement policy is very selective. Before a Berner Fan can be placed on our waiting list (with a refundable deposit), they must first submit a 21 page lifestyle questionnaire.
