This video is 3 years old. Silvas sold in the US are now made in China, not Indonesia.

I've had my MC3 for probably twenty five years. Probably looking at the MC 2G as an upgrade. Good info about Silva, last I looked they were a reputable brand, guess not anymore.

I have studied surveying for years and this is the first time I have seen this method. It seems old school but very well done and very useful thanks for posting. This should have more views and comments.👍

The Commenga can be used as a protractor. You place it from point A to B, pointing the wire to point B. You then rotate the tritium bezel mark to point north and aligned with the Eastings. You then rotate the compass to put the N needle under the tritium mark. Under the black line is your grid azimuth. To go to the field azmith, you adjust the bezel counterclockwise for a westerly declination and clockwise or an easterly declination. Each click is 3 degrees. You will be out 1 degree. Hardly enough to worry about unless you are calling in a mortar azmith. If you are concerned about the slight increase or decrease in bearing/azmith you can do the normal math from map to field or field to map.

Did the old Suunto MC2s come with a wristlock for the lanyard or is that new?

It looks like you have to old good quality MC-2 compass. The new ones have a black southern needle and are lower quality, apparently.

Finally. Someone who actually knows these compasses. Well done, sir. As a Canadian the new Silva Rangers that freeze in cold weather really made me upset. I use Suunto now. No issues. The ones with lo liquid don’t settle down fast enough.

I’m guessing the GI compass has a global needle.
