Dude, the timing of this video. Yesterday I was playing with some really worn out strings, and I noticed that the tone was pretty cool while I was jamming to some songs with headphones on. Then I went to "inspect" what exactly I was doing that made it sound better and arrived at the same conclusion that you did. (The thing I was doing different was the angle of the pick and the movement of the hand) Funny how the right hand technique plays a massive role on the tone and most people don't even notice it very much

@@metal_helm They are the the best of both worlds both in terms of the sound quality and their packaging. Thoes vintage Japanese pressings of Sad Wings of Destiny and pretty much any of Priest's 70's and 80's albums were immaculately mastered and engineered (touched up) by my people🇯🇵 way back in the day. A lot of vintage Japanese heavy metal and hard rock records sound so dynamic and crisp at the same time

yeah I've learned over time to never listen to people that try to say anything in particular doesn't make a difference especially when it comes to making a better tonal outcome, every little nuance from the pick, the strings, the amp, the cable, the technique, the quality build of the guitar, the materials used for the aforementioned, etc all contribute to the end result.

Great video breakdown and scientifical analysis! Of course there's "tone" (sound, style) in the fingers! Every player has their own style and the dynamics each comes up with is directly related to whatever combination of technique they use in the picking hand, it's not "all or none" but somewhere in between; however, at the end you question this affect having relevance in the fretting hand? That I would have to disagree with and argue some of the style, sound or tone of a particular players riff comes from the fretting hand techniques they employ throughout the totality of the riff. If you get my drift? (grip, arch, neck size, finger length or dexterity, 3 note power chord vs. pinkie power chords, use of barred chords or upstrokes for emphasis, squeels, etc) MAybe that's ur next experiment?! \m/

Good show, but nah, not a fan of this re-mix, or any 'cleaning up/modernising of the Hard Rock/Metal '70's sound, it detracts the warmth and clarity of the original, especially that muffled hi-hat section , added effects etc. Some '80's metal bands albums dont need a re-mix, they need to be totally re-recorded from scratch , (but not anything done by Mutt Lange, Randy Burns , Max Norman or Beau Hill !) especially the vocal and drum sounds some of them got , maybe as a result of the band members and producers losing some or most of their hearing after years of high volume exposure , attempting that 'stadium sound' or were just too blasted to care, haha! Modernly those tunes played live is a obviously different story, but i like my albums from any era, to sound like they came from that era with the recording processes and mikes , amps, vibes , mistakes , studio room characteristics , vocal and instrument tonalities of the times, be it '20's-40's gramaphone crooners , swing bands and blues, '50's rock 'n roll, 60's psychedelica, '70's swampy hard rock/crispy sounding disco, to '80's high end metal/deep -dark or standard pop-rock /electronica or ambiant. It documents the passage of time and sonic history. After the 90's and into the 2000's, thanks to the heavy use of pro tools , and almost stock standard recording methods and gear ,so many metal bands albums sounded like they were all done pretty much on the same day with the same producer/gear/ effects /drums and guitars, especially Priest as they got sonically 'heavier' and lost that unique 'tone seperation' of KK and Glen from Painkiller to present , anyway,, end of my blather , anyone want a beer while i'm up? cheers..

hahahah, nah, I totally get where you are coming from. You brought up a good point though. The remix is a little closer to what they probably sound like live now, so for someone like me, who didn't grow up with this, the remix feels like JP to me. BUT, if you did grow up with it, I understand the aversion to it. The more I hear it, the more I feel the original might be better, but I am totally about modernizing older albums (if you saw any of my shorts you would understand) (^_^)

@metal_helm > I am use to it but also I noticed a lot of remix/ remasters change the dynamics of the song to something that does not make it sound like a piece of art/ music. @@metal_helm Yas, the bridge riffs (what u call breakdown here) and behind-the-solo riffs in old metal songs are often surprises to fans themselves 😅 At least to me. I've few times gone like "Oh, they had this kind of riff here!? 😱". Even with this song when I just listened to the original, then ur clip again, I was like "That riff wasn't even in there?!" 😨 Then I had to check again and thaaaarrr it wassss... As a late teen buying Overkill discs when I got to the earlier albums, I thought Electro-Violence was the lone song on Taking Over that actually sounded like the Overkill that we would later know! 'Cos the first 2 albums were a bit different in style. But on the 3rd album they were already in full Overkill mode! 🤘🔥 Most people seem to like Horrorscope the best or at least rank it high, but I think Under The Influence and The Years Of Decay are better and peak Overkill 👌
