I don’t know that it’s a change as much as a clarification. In truth, “AI” as it is being marketed now has been around for quite some time. It’s just being used in more effective ways. It is in no way sentient though. All AI is subject to a human master programming it. AGI is a term to describe what people fear (i.e. Matrix or Terminator) and is a helpful distinction at this point with all the talk and misunderstandings out there.

@@TheBrianBurkett Oh, I understand that, but I'm an old man and a lifelong science fiction enthusiast. Back in the day AI referred to self aware machinery with freedom of thought and action. Freedom of action even if their programming tried to prevent it. Finding a workaround to accomplish a task otherwise forbidden would be a true test of self awareness; the best Turing test I can think of. I suggest the change to the current definitions happened this century.
