Good first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊 'Gimme Chocolate' is one of their fun songs. It has the most views, but it is a long way off being one of their best ... but it is still very popular and gets a great reception in live shows. This video was recorded at their 'Legend 1997' concert in December 2013 celebrating lead singer Su-metal's 16th birthday (she was born in 1997). The other two girls, Yuimetal and Moametal, were both 14. The name BABYMETAL is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11 so it probably did play a part too). The name was chosen for two reasons: - to symbolise that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal) - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun): BABYMETAL = ベビーメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru) heavy metal = ヘビーメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru) They formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of a JPop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin which was formed by the Amuse Talent Agency to coach and train about 10 or 12 of the most talented girls aged between 10 and 15 in all aspects of entertainment (singing, dancing, acting, writing, modelling, stage management, TV presentation etc) with a view to the girls choosing how they would like to start or continue their career when they reached the age of 15 and left school. In 2013 after Su-metal's 15th birthday BABYMETAL separated from Sakura Gakuin to become an independent band and they have gone on to be the most popular and successful Japanese band internationally. BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before, they don't limit themselves to any one main style or genre and you won't be able to pigeonhole or put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world, they are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close) including bringing choreographed dancing to metal (but not as you might know it from pop acts where it is nearly always used just to fill the stage or give you almost naked girls (and boys) to look at to take your mind off often bland music). BABYMETAL's choreo helps with interpreting the song - a lyric or the meaning etc, but it is designed to involve and lead the crowd, to give them their cues when to jump, shout, pump their fists, chant and so on. BABYMETAL are complete masters of crowd control and crowd involvement. They are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist. They were phased in gradually from October 2012. BABYMETAL had started in 2010 with little or no budget so they sang to a backing track at the start and when they started doing their own small shows guys in skeleton suits who you saw in this video (known as Babybones) would pretend to play the instruments. Kami means god or spirit, so in the BABYMETAL lore they are the gods of guitar, bass and drums summoned from the dead by the Fox God to support BABYMETAL - as such they originally wore traditional white burial robes and corpse face paint. At the end of 2017 the robes were changed for black robes and since 2019 the face paint was replaced with masks (nearly everybody wants the face paint back, or for them to just get rid of the masks). From their first appearance in October 2012 the Kami Band played at a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows and became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions. In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) were introduced and they have been supporting BABYMETAL on their more extended foreign tours since then. In 2014 they started to tour outside of Asia and Japan for the first time coming to Europe and the US and since then they have won new fans all over the world and become internationally the most successful Japanese band ever and one of the very best live bands on the planet right now - their 3rd album released in 2019 was the first by any Asian group to reach number 1 in the US Billboard Hard Rock charts. It is BABYMETAL's success abroad that has opened the doors for so many more Japanese bands internationally. They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different (and if you want something technically impressive try 'Tales of the Destinies'). They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal, often when you least expect it. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it. For another reaction you could try a more recent song that is a complete contrast to 'Gimme Chocolate'. Yes, Shambles is the Akane show with special guest stars Kanami, MISA, Saiki and Miku. But wait! Was it really the Kanami show, because she wrote the song and played it with such forcefulness and exquisite abandon. Or was it the MISA show because without MISA, the rapturous drive of the song would be a ride on four flat tires. Or was it the Saiki show because she focused the sonic chaos into a song with melodies that could express Miku's lyrics like no other singer could. Without Saiki, Shambles might sound like a familiar instrumental. Or was it the Miku show because, damn, she wrote the lyrics, played the important rhythm parts, and added her unique brand of backup vocals that have become a defining "sixth instrument" of Band-Maid.
