Nice machine Ghosty, it makes me think that maybe I should finally unbox and set up the new silicone Mac that I bought months ago and haven't touched, still in the box with the shrink wrap intact. To be honest I haven't had any motivation to use it, I got it to switch music production from windows to Mac, because I was fed up with Windows updates always breaking my system; However, I'm no longer motivated to make music anymore because people can text input what they want into AI programs and spit out in minutes what takes me 8 hours to make in my DAW, so what's the point.

Sorry I'm a tad later replying to this matey. Yeah I did download it a while back just for a look-see at it. I don't think I would consider installing it for myself just yet as it's still based on Debian 'old stable' and not Bookworm. I did dig around a bit over the last couple of days and note that the dev(s?) are working really really diligently to make this Linux distro as functional and 'Windows user' friendly as they can, creating good thoughtful in-depth functionality that is something of rarity in many 'friendly' distros recently (such as Vanilla, Zorin, Elementary and Pop!). For a distro designed to appeal to disgruntled Windows users who long for the good old days of Windows 7 this could be a serious contender considering it goes that extra mile beyond just 'the look'. I'd be tempted to try it again when it has a more up-to-date base though. There is also a KZbin channel showcasing the development as it moves along, so I'll be keeping an eye on that. ;)

Hi Ghosty, Your Dad was a wise geezer keeping the coffers empty to get the return on his N.I. payments he dedrved! Which do you prefer LMDE or MX? MX has been all that has occupied my 64 bit PC HDD/SSD (MIYO for 32 bit Dell mini 9 which may have to go soon as, I understand Debian are dropping 32 bit support) since MX15. I have thought about trying LMDE or Debian, but just too damn lazy to change. ¡Feliz Navidad y Feliz año nuevo, from sunny (usually) Andalucia.
@stationsixtyseven67
@stationsixtyseven67 14 күн бұрын
For me it's MX out of the two because it's been mu go-to for ten years now. It suits machines of all strengths and configurations where perhaps LMDE might struggle on some older less powerful rigs. LMDE looks fantastic but is initially limited to Cinnamon which can be heavy. Andalucia? You lucky man :)

And I know you are well up to the manual shell intervention work that does show benefit if you fully indulge. Slowly mothing away from linux, but I am running mx, fedora, chimera-linux, void, and manjaro on drives. The recent codswallop with removing credits for anyone Russian or even slightly Russian fro their kernel work input as developers is truly the last straw. Ah the Mate, the Gnome 2 looking OS that has changed so much over the years, that even the welcome screen and Software Boutique are now Snap packages themselves, which was a weird decision of Wimpy to make. Though to be fair he was working and leading mainstream Ubuntu at the time of Snap packages being properly released. You cannot get the welcome or Software Boutique back to being a Deb file as it used to be. It was this move that put me off of it. Plus where the hell has Ambiant Mate Themes gone? Though I think I have them somewhere on my Dropbox? Will take a gander. I have them in all different colours, like the Yaru themes. I'm pretty sure that the Ambiant Mate themes are still installable from Ubuntu-Welcome? Don't quote me on that though. Still a lot of green with this Mate ain't there?

I think a lot of the hate Ubuntu gets is from when they initially introduced mandatory snaps (and maybe some lingering distaste from the Amazon search debacle from before then). Snaps were slow and untidy back then. Things have changed as they often do and it's pretty seamless now - though developer scrutiny still needs to be tightened up a lot. I agree with your policy of avoiding snaps as far as is possible. Thanks for watching :)

Why should constantly using only one distro be an exercise? I have used Ubuntu for more than 10 years, changing only LTS releases to LTS release, almost no issues (just reading carefully for hardware compatibility when choosing next laptop) Now unfortunately work for a company with mac laptops and I struggle( planning to return back to Ubuntu)
@stationsixtyseven67
@stationsixtyseven67 2 ай бұрын
'Why should constantly using only one distro be an exercise?' because my immediate peer group are notorious distro-hoppers and I myself have been pretty reactionary when Canonical drop new 'innovations' from time to time. This exercise was to see if I had overreacted to such things. My conclusion to that is 'yes I have', and what I take away from this exercise is that GNU/Linux users waste far too much time sweating the details and not enough time accepting that we are all one group, whether on Arch, Gentoo, Debian, Slackware etc. We are all in a place that we should celebrate rather than wasting time and energy in-fighting. :)

Tried Snap, Flatpak, and deb. When i would play ATS without OBS is ran fantastic and beautiful. When I would go to record it tanked the fps. I fiddled with a ton of settings in each. My gamer is Ryzen 5 2600 X, 16gb ddr 4, and GTX 1650. It should be able to handle recording at 720p.

Wayland session or X11 matey? I know I have problems under Wayland, but I don't game on these laptops.

@@stationsixtyseven67 If I remember correctly... When you install the proprietary Nvidia driver the session defaults to X11. Yeah and that's the conclusion I came to. It's probably something between the driver and OBS. Not recording, it ran fantastic. 24.04 will find its home on one of the many other PC's I have without Nvidia.

I've been using Mint for so long on my media streaming laptop that i have lost count but it's gotta be 8+ years. I just got some nice powered by Linux Mint stickers on ebay for my 2 Thinkpads, they are chrome and black and look cool on the laptops. Gotta love no snaps on Mint. 😁

I agree matey, but look at us: first, we kicked back against pulseaudio and most likely we're using it now (or even pipewire), then it was systemd and we're mostly using it now, then it was sandboxed programs - or was it? was it just snaps? ...the thing is, as much as we fight it change just happens anyway ;) I still love my Debian and MX the bestest though.

@@GManWritesAnd I'll happily use appimages. Theyre more like portable apps were back on windows to my mind.

I do miss Gnome 2 days, as for me it was more exciting.

Never fancied a bit of MATE? I was all over it in the 16.04 days but with GTK 3 it all seemed to go downhill.

You can find the startup sounds known as login in /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/ desktop-login.ogg if I remember rightly?

Could well be but I was hoping to access it from the UI for demo purposes.

@@stationsixtyseven67 hello Nigel. Tbh, a strike, or ban, or even worse threat os irrelevant to me. I know I've said it before, but I'm close to the end with my channel. Looking after our land at 68 is more tiring than five years ago, andit gets harder as time passes. Splitting logs for winter during first half of this year, well, until last month, was quite an effort this time round. As they say, flesh is NOT so willing of late!! Be safe.

A little small for the money I thought, but I'm hunting down the pretty bits. I'll bet our mate Sloeye knows exactly where to look though, seeing as it's his neck of the woods :)
