If you don't have experience with Audacity (as in, old projects you need to continue working with), I recommend the latest, which is 3.7.1 as of this writing.

What are the best Audacity presets? Is it possible to preset my Audacity so I record audio to pass the ACX Check everytime?
@stuartsaudacitytipsАй бұрын
Thanks for the question. "Best" depends on what kind of work you're doing, and also varies depending on the individual performer. It is not possible to preset Audacity so that your audio automatically passes ACX check every time, but it's possible to get close. The key is consistency every time you record: in your recording space, in your equipment, and in your performance.
@IamjasonallenАй бұрын
@ I like your communication/teaching style. However, I was looking for something that was more step-by-step on “how to” adjust my recording so that I can pass the ACX check. The two videos that you have uploaded so far are a great explanation as to how and why sound works, but not so much a step-by-step aid. 🙂

@@Iamjasonallen Thanks again. I hear you. The format for SAT is short tips, and I'm currently in the process of releasing these video versions of previously published tips (email newsletters), and catching up with that aspect. I've been thinking about some other video ideas for longer content like you're talking about. But it's a clicks and likes economy, so we've got to keep building the SAT audience if I'm going to stand any chance of being able to make those other videos. I have a saved mp3 file of silence that I can add as an additional track if I get the message that my noise floor is too low, adding back in that missing noise. After I save my finished mp3 to my desktop, I add it back into my project and then do the ACX check on that, to double check that everything is still within range.
@stuartsaudacitytips3 ай бұрын
Just keep in mind that ACX Check measures only the quietest half-second in the selected audio for noise floor.

@stuartsaudacitytips4 ай бұрын
Yes, you can. In the Keyboard (renamed to Shortcuts in the latest versions), use the Name selection and Search on the plugin name to find the one you want, then assign a shortcut as you would for anything else (don't forget to click the Set button after you choose the shortcut!).

Hi and thanks for the video @ Drivers. When I'm using audacity with the WASAPI driver does this change the driver in Windows audio settings? If I'm using zoom does this change the driver type as well? If I use a Yamaha MG10XU w/usb interface what driver is used? Thanks for your assistance. PeterD
@stuartsaudacitytips4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment/questions. I can't provide answers for every application, version of Windows, and interface hardware. I'm not aware of any interaction between Audacity settings and other applications. In general, when you use a USB interface or mic, the setting you select in Audacity is what Audacity will use for that device.
@ItsMarcoRBX4 ай бұрын
WASAPI is louder than directsound on my side? It shows more db in the monitoring and the waves are bigger.. Why is that?
@stuartsaudacitytips4 ай бұрын
This is not a behavior I've observed before. If all settings in Audacity are the same, you should get similar results with the same hardware. YMMV depending on version of Windows, hardware, etc.

Hi Stuart, negative decibels is a difficult topic to explain, and I think an important concept was missed in this video. Decibels are a type logarithm (the value is 10 to the power of the decibels). So -2 dB is the square root of 10 which is a positive value between 0 and 1.0. Then -3 dB is the cube root of 10 which is a smaller fractional number, yet positive value. And 0 dB is the same as 10 to power 0 which equals 1.0. That’s called unity or Full Scale. The confusion for me was the question of how can there be negative sound? It helped me to learn all negative decibels represent fractions less than 1.0 that are positive values. You touched close to that concept by showing that the linear scale in Audacity is positive between 0.0 and 1.0. Cheers
@stuartsaudacitytips4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Yes, the entire subject of measurement can get quite lengthy and technical. I try to keep SAT "nerdy enough to learn something new" without getting too deep into the weeds, since most readers/viewers aren't extremely technical. There are other editions that deal with the dB scale, too (some haven't been made into videos yet), so check those out and stay tuned for more!

Good catch! Not sure what I was looking at back then; I've removed that section. Episode 057 (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYO0q3qLnZKFg6s) is a much more complete presentation of volume/perceived loudness, and has correct values. Thanks for the comment.

It would have been helpful to talk about the effect of using one vs the other, and the circumstances under which one may choose one over the other - application rather than just describing what it is.
@stuartsaudacitytips8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! The general rule is use Loudness Normalization if the client requirements are in LUFS; if they're in dB, use Normalization. Hope this helps.
@johnbuell80358 ай бұрын
@@stuartsaudacitytips Stuart, thanks for the response but, no, that’s not really helping. I understood already from your video that the two methods use different scales. But I am still left with no understanding of the practical effects of application. I’m not talking about which scale/method a client asks for. And I’m not talking about only voiceover work. I’m talking about bringing your audio to a good-sounding safe level, in general. Normalization has been around forever and it’s easy enough to understand for practical use. We know we need to be under 0dB to avoid clipping. Perhaps -1dB if you want to push it to the max, maybe -3bB to be more conservative. But I have absolutely no idea where LUFS fits in that picture. I’m sure the info is out there, but your video would have been a good place to take a couple of extra minutes to complete that picture.

Hi, thanks for the video, really helpful. A silly question but why dose the waveform go both directions from the centre? If it's showing loudness why dose it not just go from one point and then up? Hope that makes sense.
@stuartsaudacitytips9 ай бұрын
Great question! Sound is caused by pressure changes moving through a medium (usually air, for humans). The waveform shows increases and decreases in pressure (called compression and rarefaction when we talk about gases like air); increases rise above the centerline and decreases fall below it. Silence is right in the middle, when no changes in pressure occur. Hope this helps!

If you add $Thanks then people can say thank you in a concrete way. I would like to know more about Macro's and the Nyquist language. I would like to be able to export a selection and save it to tab separated format to go into Excel. I do most of my algorithm development one-on-one with the data. A millions samples is enough for getting pretty good idea. Then some programming language to run Audacity in real time as it is recording. Some streams I would process and only keep the statistical summaries, not the raw data every time. Most sensors I work with run years unattended. Developing new ones means getting enough data to work with. Sometimes the data is only available online in a format that is not easy to use. I have lots of ESP32, STM32, PI and other small processors now. None of them hook into Audacity (maybe you know how), though the processors do have wireless or ethernet or USB, so could send things to Audacity, it if had hooks or tools for that sort of thing. Would like to try some microphone arrays with tens or thousands of sensors. Richard Collins, The Internet Foundation
