Mitres Edge, another multi-winner of the cab franc challenge, might be another boutique winery worth checking out. Other than that, I'd love to see you guys dive into the real, practical, peer reviewd influence of soil (/protolith) on what's in the glass, e.g. testing whether granitic syrah is in fact more floral than its clay based counterparts, etc. Also also, minerality? Salinity? Same or different? But more importantly, where does it come from (I don't buy the salty breeze spiel)? And more flavour compound-microbiology-terroir link explainer vids, please (loved your vid on Phenylmethanethiol).
@handrinkssolowineclub27 күн бұрын
Jonathan! Thank you for Mitres Edge. Will go hunt them down. The sea salt issue is an ongoing topic that has bothered me for some time. I thought I had debunked the “sea breeze” theory in 2022 with help from a BDX viticulturist, but I’m afraid “wind-carried salt deposits” made a comeback late in 2024 😂 will keep trying to get to the bottom of it! As for mineral deposits, thus far, the clues are pointing towards understanding how minerals affect VINES not GRAPES.

Interesting video thanks for creating it. Perhaps the grape needs more altitude, cold winter temperatures during vine dormancy and chalky soils like in Ribera del Duero. Think Vega Sicilia, Pingus etc. We don't have the conditions in SA to make tempranillo of that quality (arguably)...perhaps a region like Ceres Plateau could experiment with the grape?
@handrinkssolowineclubАй бұрын
Well, definitely not in Paarl ;-) That said, some elevated vineyards on the Southern end of Franschhoek, and also in the Klein Karoo have produced some far more engaging results. Try Stony Brook's Ovidius or the De Krans Tinta Rortiz. Both manage to produce pleasant wines with decent fruit and nothing more than med+ alcohols.

Que Syrah, Syrah… Whatever will be maybe? 😂 I could not help myself and thanks for this. Honestly, when my mental model broke down was when an established farm, whose Shiraz I liked, changed from Shiraz to Syrah and their argument was backed by the style of their wine. It was quite a long time ago, and I can’t remember for sure who it was but the name popping up in my head as suspect is a Franschhoek one 🤫
