Thanks for this! Floyd was my great-great uncle. Fascinating old gentleman when I knew him. I interviewed him about his WWII experiences for the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies in the early 1990s. The interview is available through BYU for anyone interested in barnstormers in the West. He had a photo album from those days - I hope was donated to an archive.

This is a good story but there is an other side to it. I ran a uranium mine near slick rock Co, and had 8 Navaho miners who made a fantastic living with what was paid to miners! I was told many times that they could not find a job even at a third of what they were being paid. We followed all the laws and kept ventilation above the minimum requirements! The Navajo miners were the best workers I ever worked with!
@Akerfeldt772 ай бұрын
That isnt a good enough reason to abandon the land full of toxic waste. You paid them well and poison future generations, yep, seems just fine, right? Pipe down, boomer. The world has paid enough for your greed.

He was a hero for me. I was a river rat in the ‘70s in the SW. I met him at the San Juan R. put in Bluff,UT..went to his memorial at Arches. Desert Solitaire. Monkey Wrenching,activities I blame on Cactus Ed. Thought of him lately at Lithic Bookstore,Fruita,CO..oh,I still have one of my old ammo cans,its got an old Belknap Grand Canyon River Guide in it. I blame Ed 😋 An aphorism (with dated photo) 25:36 25:36 guide always stuck with me and reminds of Ed Abbey ..”Girls grill golden brown pork chops where Powell party spread meager rations”. ~ Thanks Ken for the ammo can review.

Where was the original spot where Abby's trailer located?
@EricTemple3 ай бұрын
The trailer was behind the Balanced Rock in what is now a gravel pit for road maintenance. The original Arches dirt road came in that way from Hwy 191.

I was just in havasupai in March. The tribe was fighting a proposed mine that would contaminate all their drinking water downstream. Of course the mine won and mined anyways somewhere around January of this year. Arsenic and uranium was released into their aquaphors. Therefor it is impossible for them to drink uncontaminated water without flying it in. Also visitors have to drink from the springs. This June many hikers got extremely sick and had to be flown out. It's just disgusting that the rich gets away with this.

I just finished Desert Solitaire, which was written in 1968 - it rings just as true today in 2024. I'm so thankful to you for posting this interview from such a clear thinking and well spoken person. The issues he mentions are becoming increasingly critical, and need to be addressed. We need to wake up, and vote in people who will prioritize these environmental concerns. We need to take care of our planet! If only everyone would wake up, just a little bit, simplify, respect and care for the earth, we might be able to preserve what we've been given.

I am willing to believe that Butch and Sundance didn’t die 1908 in Bolivia. There are no solid facts which prove this to be true. However, this story about William T. Philipps sound fishy. He didn’t look like Butch, and I really don't think that plastic surgery at the beginning of the 20th century was able to alter faces that much. And the actions of Philipps don't prove that he was really Butch Cassidy. He might've had a lot of fun when he pretended to be the famous outlaw 😉
