Ma Lin was an extraordinary player. Sometimes his loopdirves engaged the ball at the bouce similar to a pips player. The only disappointment from Ma's career is missing the WTTC World Singles Title. I believe he ended up 2nd in 3 different occasions.

This was Ma Lin at his best. His serves set up his devastating 3rd ball attack to the right or left leaving Kim helpless. Most of the time, Kim was on the defensive and couldn't get his own powerful smashes into play.

Ma Lin's grandfather committed suicide (jump) a week before the match due to a long term illness. To avoid having mental impact on Ma Lin during the match, his family kept it secret from him until right after he lost this match, at the press conference. That evening, Cai Zhenhua and Liu Guoliang had dinner with the athletes and Ma Lin got drunk. According to Wu Jingping (his coach), Ma Lin then returned to his hotel room, screamed out loud, and then barfed all over his bed...

absolutely no, Ma Lin is more versatile, more fun-entertainer, more fun to watch, better serve, better serve-returning; but absolutely not better player wang liqin is just defition of "the great", only he started to show his feeling at game7 and score 9-5; Ma Lin was in stress hugely and appears so obviously But on the other hand, i can agree that Ma Lin could win this title at least 1 time; but Wang Liqin deserved olympic game also at least 1 time

Good match. Well it took our attacker most of the whole match but he finally figured it out. At 2:51 and for the rest of the way out he started playing smarter. Instead of trying to power loop (of which he was missing a lot) all those LP backspin blocks, he started high arching soft looping those balls in. And guess what, the blocker wasn't good at attacking. I did enjoy watching the penholder as I myself play a inverted/LP twiddle game. My training partner, who gets a lot of practice against me, knows it's smarter to simply soft loop those balls in over & over. Attacking those high arcing soft super spiny balls isn't all that easy. I usually twiddle back to inverted and go for it. This penholder here was trying to do it with his LPs with not much success. Again a great match.

This was one of the first tournaments played with the 40mm ball. And Ma didn´t go to Sydney Olympics and spent a lot of time training exclusively with the new ball. He was more well-prepared than any other player by that time. If Kim won the title it would have been a major upset.

+José Roberto Nakata But Ma Lin is the better player anyway. Look at their records, Ma has a much more successful career than Kim. Both Kim and Ma played against each other in many occasions and I think Ma usually came out on top. In fact, Ma Lin is one of the GOAT table-tennis player. The WTTC single championship is about the only trophy eluded Ma Lin.

Gimme a break!Kim Taek Soo played at the time of European dominance.Ma Lin had much softer competition. Look to whom he lost at the World Cup:Rosskopf in 2001 and Primorac in 2002,Waldner at the 2004 Olympics...players of Kim's generation.Kim won the Asian Cup in 1998 beating Liu Guoliang and Kong Linghui back to back. Ma wouldn't have done much better in the '90's.Actually,the Koreans were superior in terms of footwork and forehand attack, without Yoo Nam Kyu and Kim Taek Soo there wouldn't be inverted penholders.Even Ma Lin started as a short pips hitter.
