That was pretty impressive. I'd say a Rivian R1S is comparable to a Jeep Grand Cherokee in off-road ability.

Awesome 😎 My Lightning couldn't do that. Plus the Rivian was on ATs? 😱 Ford better get the Bronco going soon!!

Having just returned from TrailRecon Summit 3 at Merus where I’d heard several times about this Jeep (a 4xe like my own) and its recovery by the Merus team (not from any of them, but from my fellow participants), I decided to watch this video while I at lunch today. Having at least briefly met most if not every one of the people in this video and seen most of the rigs used in the recovery, I can’t help but be even more impressed than I already was with the team of people I met down at Merus. I saw that cliff in real life and it’s way, way more impressive than comes across on this video. I can’t speak to any of the comments about other ways this Jeep could have been recovered, but sometimes you have to work with the equipment and people you actually have. In this case, no one was hurt (most important) and no equipment (other than a tow strap) was broken. I suspect that they rigged and pulled conservatively and taking the extra day may have made all the difference. I was already impressed with the level of practical knowledge represented by the Merus team from being there and this recovery only adds to how impressed I am with this team. Add in the beauty of the Palo Duro Canyon and the amazing trails and I’m already looking forward to another trip - even at 950 miles from my home! Well done Dirk, Pete and team.

What I don't understand is why would you do it without getting paid. Recovery is the insurance company's problem. Isn't it?

Awesome job! Not only saved a $10,000 tow bill. Got a great recovery and video out of it!

Looks like you could have used an Erickson S64 to haul that out of there.

Im not going to lie that was pretty impressive. Especially from what is essentially a luxury off road SUV on very street-able tires with a newer driver. Id like to see some oldies but goodies on this course like the eternal short wheel base enemies Nissan Xterra with its awesome ABLS and Toyota FJ cruiser with its full coil suspension.

A helicopter extraction would not cause nearly that amount of damage to the terrain. How did you come to the decision?

Great video. Love what you did here. My questions are why not reach out to like #mattsoffroadrecovery #trailmater ?? Yes, they’re several states away. But that’d have been a good collaboration. Even #trailrecon seems like a good resource. What are your plans for the future recoveries?!

Sounds like the owner did not want to have to bother selling the vehicle for some reason. When does anyone ever shift an automatic into Neutral and then get out? Even if you are not paying attention, maybe you could leave it in drive and get out, but would notice that before you even got out of the Jeep as it would start moving forward and you would then hit the brake. Most of the time, once the door is open, the Jeep would shift itself into Park.

I suppose if you were silly enough to buy a 4xe, then you were silly enough to realize nobody would buy it from you when you figured out you didn't like it. Solo camping trip to cliff-side camp-site - check. Oddly leave automatic in Neutral - check. Insurance bails you out of bad purchase - check.

Trash is more important. The geology of the canyon is both amazingly restorative and destructive all in one. Meaning, after this weekends thunderstorms you won’t be able to tell there was a recovery
