That "old fashion" soldering iron is actually and American Beauty and they are still made today. I have a few. They are used in copper work, stained glass and even as the heat source for branding stamps. There is one company that offers them as an alternate heat source for stamps. They are a little pricey but they are the bees knees. Nice video by the way.

Thank you! One of my least favorite qualities of my current apron is that it favors one side (makes itself crooked) the longer I stay in it. Do you have an opinion about the strap orientation or anything that could be beneficial? I have never owned one with a crisscross strap. I’m thinking that is my next logical step… TIA!

Hi, unfortunately I've stopped making videos on this channel. I've been very busy with other projects and found when I do have time for my woodworking that it takes far too long to setup cameras to cover all the shots I need. Editing the videos also adds hours to the projects that I no longer have. I'm sorry but that's just the reality of the situation. Perhaps, when I have something I feel will make a great video, I may add some to this channel.

nice video. I have the incra fence and my jessem guide is on its way. I noticed that your incra positioner seats higher against the fence than mine. Mine seats only about 1/4 inch above the fence so I think the mounting kit will work with my incra fence. Will find out soon......

Many side-mount drawer slides have their cabinet-side attachment points on little tabs cut out from the rest of the slide body. This makes it so you could shim behind the cabinet-side part of the slide with, e.g. some washers, and those tabs will slightly bend in when screwed down. (Although I suspect you’d be better off bending the tabs a bit first so you don’t strip out your screw holes in the cabinet.) I also thought of the edge banding idea when I was building my work bench and didn’t do a great job of making my walls parallel. I added banding to the walls themselves, but doing it to the drawers would’ve been a lot easier. Or, now knowing about those tabs, I would probably just use washers behind the slides.

Hello and thank you for the video. I install kitchen cabinets and need a white pencil to mark sometimes dark stained or painted moldings to length. I am leaning towards the Sewline Ceramic white pencil. Have you ever tried it on dark wood with a clear coat on it, that can be a little slick sometimes depending on the quality from the factory? I need a sharp crisp line that is easy to see and easy to use (I prefer not to have to constantly sharpen it).
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking Жыл бұрын
While I’ve never used the Sewline pencil on pre finished wood it should work out OK. Any white pencil will tend to flake if pressed too hard. When it does you will need to resharpen. For your job I pick the Pica because it keeps a fine point fairly well and is very easy to sharpen.

I would have outlined the dog, letting the grain (life) of the wood show through the life of the dog. (Rather than dark shadow like form of burnt wood.) Same reason I shy away from making black borders in my black and white prints in my photography darkroom.

Just stumbled across your channel because I was looking at ITunes Pro2.0 hearing protection reviews. After watching a couple of your videos I was hooked! I"m now subscribed. I too am a Retiree getting into woodworking as a hobby, and like you I recently built a workshop/garage (24x24). Muddling along, I'll be following and learning from your efforts and endeavors. Thanks for your candor and honesty Don. Rest assured, your objective for why you are sharing and putting in the effort to bring us these videos is greatly appreciated. Enjoy!

Goodday sir. How about adding a temperature controler in the line up? Isn't it possible to isolate the branding head from the branding iron itself? A safer option I would say. Cobus🐳

I just installed the 24" version. Wall space is a premium in my shop and this metal design is denser than what I can build with wood. I had no problem with the self-tapping screws using a nut driver socket on a drill/driver. A long extension helped as well. I think the design is solid. You can start both screws without holding the bracket in place which makes it easy to install the brackets even while the base plate is mounted on the wall.

First time I've seen one of your videos. I'm in the process of building my first drawer and so afraid I've got the measurement wrong. But at least now i know how i can fix it if it's too narrow. Thank you. But what if it's too wide? Well i guess I'll be doing a lot of sanding since i don't have a table saw! 😂 Thanks again for the lesson!

I too have a Comet 2 lathe. I've had it about 4 years and it's been a lot of fun. I didn't do any turning during Covid though...My wife said no injuries that require a hospital visit...LOL. I broke the belt today and I'm picking up a new one tomorrow to finish a project. I've made quite a few things, bowls, pens, music boxes with lids. Trinket boxes with lids. It's all fun...until the belt breaks...LOL.

John, thanks for the comment. That is a great solution to the problem. Sometime in the future I’d like to get Easy Chuck or possibly a chuck for each type of jaws. Since I’m not just a turner such an expenditure is not a choice for me right now. I decided that make the video for people like me who can’t afford fancier or multiple chucks.

i bought my gearheart branding iron to use it on leather. i been having so much trouble doing it so, the leather keeps on shrinking, i keep finding myself applying pressure to all sides because it doesn't stump evenly. i been using the temperature control on high T and it burns and shrinks, tried lowering the T and it doesnt burn or shrinks but doesnt stump well... think im going to try a different type of leather, like in the comments going to make sure its the veg tanned leather. thank you.

Could you have added some washers to the Incra risers to lift the mounting plate high enough to clear the positioner?
@wb_finewoodworking
@wb_finewoodworking Жыл бұрын
That would have been a way to fix it. At the time I obviously didn’t think of that and I didn’t have any small washers. One reason I made the video is to show my solution which I still feel is a much better way to mount the JessEm Guides. Just remove two large jig “nuts” two large washers and it’s off. With the JessEm kit there are eight screws and risers and if I added your washers that would be at least two per riser, perhaps more, to attain the right height. As someone else responded, I have the guides off and on often.
