So, in those days, Europeans didn't eat fish? They didn't know about any safe fish species? This whole story is a lie.

they were just stupid then. i reckon they got sick because they didn't know about pasteurization and the correct way to cook fish. poor bastards

Im sure their unhygienic handling of the fish had alot to do with it.

1:54 - in 1866 Cuban physician Philipe found the reason fish were poisonous. 3:09 - anothr reason is because there isn't anythin 2 catch.

I have wondered about this exact same thing, except instead of sailors starving, it is the Irish. You can't eat potatoes any more but you live on an island surounded by some of the best fishing grounds on earth back in the day, and you still starve. Did nobody in Ireland own a boat?

Nobody going to mention that big white orb at 4:17 ? Just to the right of centre screen, a little bit above the horizon. What is that?

If ciguareta is really the reason why sailors would not catch and eat fish- then why and how is that different from the fish we buy in stores? I frequently fish in the Pacific, from boat or from shore. Always eat the fish. Never even heard about this before. Something doesnt add up here.

It’s possible that they didn’t wash their hands before eating or after a deck side poop!

I'm skeptical as to whether or not fatally toxic bioaccumulation occurs commonly enough among ocean fishes as to categorically discourage consumption by starving persons.

Yeeeah, apart from knowing what fish it is you're eating.. this isn't a thing where I am from. And we're talking about, Straight from The Ocean into Stomachs Raw consumption too. Europeans just have Weak Stomachs I guess.

ciguatoxins are found in reef fish. deep water fish are not a factor. The reason they starved is because there are fewer fish in deep ocean and the sailors didn't have the modern tackle and knowledge that would allow them to easily catch enough fish to feed everyone. I doubt it was ciguatera poisoning even if they were getting sick from eating them.

Problem in the past is most people don't know how to preserve meat and food and those who do, (indians and some other fishing natives are killed). Not to mention people were very superstitious. A bad combination, superstitious, ignorant and violent.

The way to look at it is that you have to treat your comrades like your brothers and sisters. Then you'll feel less weird and feel like home.
@ComradeArthur18 сағат бұрын
I gather the vid exaggerates the risk of Ciguatera. *However* there *is* a risk and you only have to be poisoned once on a long voyage to make eating fish dangerous.
@dpan754818 сағат бұрын
Bulshit video. There must be the same people pushing the new green deal. In the seventies I travel the world catch fish everywhere and nobody from the crew ever got sick.
@A.I.musician18 сағат бұрын
Seems like you could just cook the parasites out, I think people in the old days were so superstitious they were too scared to eat it,and instead would rather die than admit their superstitious minds were wrong. Sailors have a lot of weird superstitions
@aldourbina698319 сағат бұрын
ciguatera is very rare and is seldom deadly. painful yes. I can say because me and my whole family caught it eating barracuda. years later I still eat them but only the small ones. your article is flawed big time.
@thethinktank-y9p20 сағат бұрын
While I found this interesting, what I took from it was not so much that fish could be dangerous but more that you had to be in a location where you could catch a fish. Also eating fish doesn't help with scurvy that's why the British filled their ships with limes and were called limeys.
