And this is technical proficiency of the highest level. Now he can focus on emotional expression without worrying about technical limits... I wish I was this great of a guitarist
@editorjunoАй бұрын
I think one would have to listen to more than one off the cuff improv to issue that sort of advice. I for one don't believe he spends even second "worrying about technical limits" while engaged in what amounts to composition in real time, AKA "improvisation" -- but that's just as perceived from here, so YMMV.

I don’t understand how a player of such prominence can tolerate so much distracting hum from his pickup and amp. Absurd.

As a 71-year-old man who’s been playing guitar since I was eight years old I think I see very clearly that Julian is simply posing as an earthling, but has arrived here from guitar planet 1.

I'm old enough to remember similar reactions when Coltrane dared to do "My Favorite Things" back in the day -- you know, "Great playing -- but where's the song?" 😎
@gleupp3 ай бұрын
in my opinion great improv happens when the feeling expressed in the original music is still sensed in the improv, In this case after about 15 seconds it just became note after note over some chord changes, it takes real genius to create a simple beautiful melody and then to expand on it with out losing the intent and emotion of the original line. There are very very few 'Masters" of the guitar or any instrument.

Oh come on, that is total guitar wanking, a non guitar player would never listen to that and say "wow nice song", as a practice piece for a bit of fun it's grand but as a song it's absolute fucking rubbish , no matter how technically difficult it is
@editorjuno5 ай бұрын
It's not supposed to be experienced "as a song" per se -- it's an improvisation based on the structure of a song, something for which some folks have the ear and patience while others don't. Back in the 1960s, I'm willing to bet most folks whose idea of what "My Favorite Things" should sound like came from the likes of Mary Martin or Julie Andrews would not have had the ear and/or patience to enjoy Coltrane's famous rendition. Different strokes, I suppose... www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/john-coltrane-my-favorite-things-changed-american-music-180983453/
