The strange thing is that even before Violator, DM sold a lot of records in the United States even though they act like 101 was the breakthrough...People are People charted at #13 in the US Top 40 in 1985. Music for the Masses sold a million copies in the US and charted at #35 in the US albums chart. Sure they weren't the massive stars they would become with Violator but they weren't some obscure alternative band either, I think most music fans in the US were aware of DM and they had a huge cult following in the college and alternative music scenes of the 80's.

Good lord, the interviewer is dense as hell BUT My God look at Alan what the hell!? he is drop dead gorgeous... those cheekbones sheesh. If i was not in love with him before ( ;)) I am even more now. HE is amazing.

My goodness! Was that a serious question: "I remember seeing you in the early 80s and where have you disappeared over the last 10 years?" Just shows the ridiculous attitude of the British press towards their own cutting edge artists and bands.

Depeche Mode stands heads and shoulders above U2 any day. They are a more interesting band musically and aesthetically. U2 had bigger sort of rock cliche kind of aspirations. U2 fans might disagree with me but DM truly were the independent band, even their commerical success was from ground-up and had no sort of pandering to rock industry moghuls if I may so. DM's documentary videos on 101 and Songs of Faith and Devotion had so much more to offer

Alan was Depeche Mode in the same way as Dave's voice and Martin's songs. Three-legged stool.

Not sure I would have wanted to hang out with the band in that period of time really.

I was thinking the same thing. This was probably during their worst turmoil and Alan on his way out. But Dave did a real good job of looking sober in this promotional video given what was really going on at the time.
