Remove fly wheel casing grab a socket and drill put on the nut run the drill and it will start it, once running check for rich mix, do all checks to troubleshoot. Also through the flywheel casing you can mount an electric start short motor instead of connecting the shaft just weld a socket to it and an old bicycle bmx rear sprocket case (grind tooth off. Sprocket engages only one way so make sure to weld facing the correct side so when engine running the sprocket rolls freely, wire to battery, earth, start relay from Yamaha and a start/kill button

Don't forget to re-grease the sprocket bearings with high speed bearing grease. Cost is: Starter Sprocket Weld A few bolts to mount motor to case Relay, wire and the start/stop button

So sick! I have a 78 DT400 myself and love it. Such a cool bike to ride, honestly blows my mind that at one point that was a brand new bike sold for the streets lol. You seem to have similar taste in bikes as me as I’ve been looking into getting a KDX200 lately lol seem like sweet bikes that would be a better true enduro bike so I can use that for harsher stuff I don’t wana ruin my DT400 on lol

They are underpowered but handle like a dream. Just get the correct tires listed for the bike. The front is different than the classic or silverado. I had a tire 10mm wider than spec on the front for a while. Changed it to the correct size and it handled like a Porsche. Had this exact same bike. Also, had to run 30W fork oil in the ftont to keep it from nose diving during braking. You can also do the golf tee mod from the forums and the exaust popping on decelleration will go away... It is a great beginner bike for around town. It does not do well in headwinds on the highway or steep hills. It also scrapes easily when leaning. The good news is that once you master this riding style and position all skills transfer to the 1300. Feels like the same bike only more powerful and with better ergonomics, especially if you are a tall rider.

Did you fix the brakes and check the baffle for clogging? What about the right crankcase seal? It has a fair amount of smoke which makes me suspect the seal may be leaking. Other than that it looks like a blast! Single trail riding at its best.
@ForceMoto4 ай бұрын
I got the brakes working well, and the muffler was clear. I didn't think it was smoking much, I would be worried more if it wasn't smoking!
@bryanwhitton17844 ай бұрын
Nice ride but remember that this is a 50 year old engine. The seals in the engine are probably all shot. The smoke you see is likely oil being sucked into the engine. First thing to do is remove the engine and replace both seals. I would recommend that all seals in the engine be replaced. After reassembling the engine do a leak down test just to make sure. A leaky intake gasket can be really exciting as the engine will keep revving to the moon. If that happens you can even turn off the ignition and it will keep revving. Hit the choke and hope it stops(it usually does). Second, check the exhaust pipe and pull the baffle and get your propane torch and burn off the crap filling the holes. That is likely the cause of the top enf not being crisp. With the smoke(transmission oil) being burnt the baffle will clog up quickly. Third, fix the brakes and get a new chain before you ride it again. 😜 Great bike. Big bore two strokes are the most fun you can legally have! Yeah, they vibrate and are noisy and pollute the air horribly, but man are they fun.

Thanks for the advice! I may end up taking the engine apart this winter. Or I'll sell it, because I am always looking for different projects.

Another thing most didn't know about, was the gas tank was fake. The air box was underneath it. The real tank, you had to remove the seat, to get access to.

Nice work ! I had hoped to see where all the vaccum lines went for the tank and air box so I could assemble my 90 zx10. Same leaks but in pieces when i got it. Hoping to find a diagram. Careful on that thing. Lol

Get some gloves. You'll thank me later because you will fall off at some point. Clean the carb and check the jetting against stock jetting. You might not be getting enough fuel at high rpm. Check where the slide lock is at too.

I was 27 in 1989. You simply cannot overstate the impact the FZR 600 had on the sportbike landscape. The term ‘game changer’ is over used, but would be spot on here.
