I am a British bloke who lives in Middlesex, NJ! And l must say you've captured the feel of the railroads hereabouts rather well, considering you dreamt it all up! Jamesburg is just a mile or so away and the railway actually goes right through the middle of town. It makes a connection with another line which heads north and goes to a place called Browns yard. This was formerly electrified and was sometimes used as a diversionary route for main line trains. Even GG1s were occasionally seen! I understand that in 1939 the King and Queen even came through Jamesburg whilst on their US tour. Anyway, l'd better stop, but great layout!

Graham here. Seeing Martyn's comment below, yes there are roads on both sides of the track, at least that's what Google maps showed. So I used actual houses along the road in the back scene, they are printed on 1mm card to give some relief. Delighted to hear from someone in Jamesburg and thank you for your comments.

Thank you! I painted the heritage line rails after laying and as well as it being more fiddly, I found it prevented running sessions for a few days. That meant I kept putting it off as I wanted to enjoy running sessions. This way you can get it all done, clean it off and start running trains to test how well the track was laid.

I notice that you run parallel rail joints through bends. I've seen others go with asymmetrical joins, to discourage kinks through the bends. Are you not worried about this, or are you finding the copydex does a good job of ensuring even arcs through the bends?
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway13 күн бұрын
That's a very interesting point! I think I've counteracted the effect in several ways (with one exception) as I've tried to limit the joins on the sharpest parts of the curves. When using metal joiners, and as you say glueing sleepers as close to the joiners as possible, it does seem to prevent kinks from forming. My one exception is where I've used the Peco insulated rail joiners, as these don't hold the track as rigidly. I've just bought a pack of the DCC Concepts ones so will see if they are any better. On the heritage line I've had no issues at all with this issue, but on the curves the joiners are all the tiny ones for Bullhead track. I'll certainly look out for issues during testing and see if I need to use the approach you suggest. Thanks!

Hi Martyn, great progress and some lovely details around the layout, nice to see the extent of the project. Love your videos, please keep them coming. Can I ask if you had/have any issues during testing with the super elevation and stalling? I bought a number of bags from WHWW but couldn’t get consistent running, almost as if the one side of the wheel sets lost momentary contact. Or maybe my bad track or flange cleaning….. I would be interested to know before trying again. Thanks Timo.
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway13 күн бұрын
Hi Timo, thanks for your lovely comment. So far I've not had any issues with stalling. However, I have only been able to run 4-5 different locos round the outer track so far. Not sure if it has any effect, but the curves at both ends of the layout are also on gradients. So I guess they have a similar profile to a banked racetrack in places, although whether that keeps all wheels in contact I'm not sure. I'll certainly report back if I do have any issues as testing continues.

Thanks! If you are interested in how the last stages were done I covered them in an episode of Track Talk (titled weathering stonework). As I mentioned in that video the reason I didn't film it initially is because I thought my first attempt would be terrible. The washes really were just painted all over with acrylic paint mixed with airbrush thinners, no great technique to that. The finer bits I show in the above video. Much to do but exciting as to what the layout will become! I would prefer to get the track laying done next, partly to just run some trains but also to be sure that the track layout does what you hope it does before you get too far into anything else…
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway3 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right. That was always my intention but I've never done scenics before and once I got started I got distracted because I enjoyed it so much. Then more recently the clutter in the garage from the work project made it awkward to get access to the areas where track needed laying. But I'm now on a mission to get it done. I've just been getting the electrics ready for all the droppers from the track, and have got a batch of track prepped and ready to lay. Its amazing how much can be achieved when you remove obstacles and make the process quicker and easier. Hopefully lots of progress to show soon.

What about having the foot tunnel emerging partway up the arch. You could then transition it to a girder footbridge allowing passenger access to the Speen platform, and steps to ground for the signal box?
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, its an interesting idea and I'll certainly have a think and see if that could work. Unfortunately space is really at a premium in this part of the layout and I was thinking of putting the water tower in the space at the end of the platform. But that could potentially move.
@peterhudson40274 ай бұрын
Silly niggly question that you're completely free to roll your eyes at and ignore: will you model how the passengers get to the platform - a footbridge over the running lines, perhaps? Underpass? Zip-wire?
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway4 ай бұрын
Thanks, it is a fair point. Having a small halt here was always slightly problematic for that reason. My original reasoning was that the platform was for workers and then it got taken over by a heritage line and used as a place for passengers to get out and look round the shed (the current passengers don't quite fit with that narrative). I'm now going to add some foot boards across the running line towards the signal box and it feels like that would have been ok back in the 70s.

The scene so far looks amazing and the resin pour will make a massive difference. As you said I added my river scenes around 4-5 weeks ago now, cant believe that long ago after such procrastination. I do fully get where youre coming from and it was that very same anxiety that held me back too. Your setup seems very different to mine, but looks as if it should be fine no leaks. Its the part where the river meets the board edges. Tape and seal with hot glue, easy to peel off after I choose to use real water to test, and sponge it out, but that was my choice. It did give me confident though to proceed once I knew whether I had further leaks. Gratefully I didnt use the resin to test. There are loads of videos to watch: Luke Towan is amazing, dont forget Kathy Millatt and Geek Gaming Scenics among many American channels. You will feel so much more confident once the first is done. Martin, how about a third option? Use what looks like two smaller arches inside/under the larger arch, each one half the diameter of the main arch size that you already have, but only one of the smaller arches is actually open as the walkway. The smaller arches under a larger arch is a common motif you will find in architecture. Bill

@@DonningtonCastleModelRailway Just realized the auto correct misspelled your name in my original message. Errr. Sorry about that!! Take a look at some pictures for what I am suggesting. Great video, which has given me some good ideas for my own future layout wiring. I know I'll need to think about multiple power districts too, and the PM74 is one possible way to do it, but is it Digitrax specific, or would it work with any DCC system to just split the power into districts, without any Digitrax or Loconet "smarts"?
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway5 ай бұрын
Thanks! From re-reading the PM74 manual I believe it would do short protection with any DCC system. But without Loconet you would lose some of its other functionality. I believe the DCC Specialities PSX-4 does a similar job, although haven't used one myself. You could chat to James at DCC Train Automation or someone at DCC Concepts, as they have always given me good advice when I've needed it. Hope that helps.

One of the best tutorials of this type I've seen. Extremely informative and watchable. Regarding the placement of the power meter, I'd suggest adding a separate low-cost meter - see the item OOBill uses, for example - somewhere between the DPDT switch and the Heritage Track feed. But I guess you've already thought of that option and discounted it. Like the "power districts" approach.

@@DonningtonCastleModelRailway The only thing I would point out is that the PWM rate is tied to the processor clock, so for the Arduino it's 133 KHz, which creates an audible hum in some locos. The ESP32 based board is much faster and may be effectively silent. Another neat thing is you can stack two power boards and get 4 channels, each of which is toggleable from the handset (your phone) between DCC, Prog, DC+ and DC-.

Hey Martyn - thanks for the kind mention! Must admit I don't know much about Loconet but I guess in broadcast terms it's similar to CMRI - there's so little data, in modern terms, being thrown around, that it really doesn't matter. Looking at your diagram, the thing that interested me is Loconet seems to be a ring network - is that correct? Regards, Chris
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway6 ай бұрын
Thanks Chris! I didn't mention it in the video but I am a total protocol geek. And I hadn't heard of CMRI before, so now I'm reading the protocol spec! Yes I think you're right, you don't have lots of chatty devices using bloated protocols so you don't get the issues you run into in other environments. I think the concept of LocoNet is similar to a ring, in that each device always has two interfaces, but I don't think you're ever supposed to create rings. I'm now kind of intrigued to know what happens if you did create a loop, but not brave enough to try in case you get the equivalent of a broadcast storm and it starts frying things.

Nice little project, the paint work came up really nice, shame about the brittle plastic! Out of interest would the plasticard brick sheeting be a good substitute to replace the damaged sections. Keep up the good work.
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway7 ай бұрын
Thanks! I suspect the brick sheeting would work if there is enough flex in it. The only thing I'd be mindful of is the edges that slot into the arches. In the kit those are slightly thinner with no brick pattern to help them slide inside all the lugs. Thinking about it now ... I could probably have laser engraved bricks onto the thick card I used and just inserted that instead. Nice when there are multiple ways to solve a problem!
@DavidBrown-lh1vf7 ай бұрын
Looking really good. Brick arch liners! I don’t know anyone who hasn’t had an issue with fitting them. I made a jig from from chipboard and timber strips to the same width as the arch span. Another piece of batten to go over the brick sheet, held down with long screws to keep the arch compressed. The viaduct section was then offered up to the end of the brick sheet, another piece of wood across the back with two strong rubber bands, one each side, looped round the screws holding everything in place, then glued with DCC Concepts MEK. Preforming the arch liners by curving them round a coffee mug, securing with rubber bands and leaving them in my (at this time of year) rather warm conservatory for a day or two helped getting them into the shape. One thing to be aware of if you’re going to build a multi span viaduct is that the top of the stone arch is half a millimetre wider than the bottom. In my case, seven arches had a considerable curvature which I found before assembling. After removing any moulding flash, try aligning the top edges along a spirit level and see the gap at the base where the piers attach. Rather than use the provided track bed, I used Plastruct 2mm sheet, 91106, cut to depth, spanning the joins between arches. It makes for a much stronger construction. The only downside is having to custom fit the inner walls of the parapet as the supplied track bed is only 1.5mm thick. If you did want to use the supplied track bed, offsetting it’s position to go half and half over each arch with a half section at the ends to fill in would achieve a good increase in overall strength. I have to say, my construction method differs somewhat from the supplied instruction sheet. The result is a much stronger finished article with extra bracing for rigidity.
@DonningtonCastleModelRailway7 ай бұрын
That's a really nice way of overcoming some of the issues with the kit, thanks for sharing in such detail! I did offset my stone capping to increase strength, but doing the track bed as well is a good call. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that I filed the arches down at the top to help them sit together squarer. That's why you can see paint marks of different designs appeared on the track bed after construction. These were to indicate which pieces were to be glued to which after I'd done the filing and got them sitting nicely.
